ATTACHMENT Foa BEDS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 622,000, aat March 28,1899.

' Application filed July 5, 1898. Serial No. 685,135. (N0 model.)

To @ZZ whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, J OEL H. GREENE, a citi"i zen of the United States of America, and a resident of the city and county of- Dubuque and State of Iowa, have invented certain Improvements in Attachments for Beds,of which the following is a full description.

My invention relates to beds, with peculiar reference to those used in hospitals or by indevice may be had, attention is called to the following specification and drawings accompanying the same and forming a part hereof.

Figure l represents a vertical section of the bed-post and standard when partly extended for use; Fig. 2, a vertical section of the bedpost when the standard is inclosed. Fig. 3 is a perspective of one of the hooks'removed.

Like letters of reference denote corresponding parts in each of the figures.

Referring to the drawings, A designates the outer shell or post, having the usual casters a. Oommencing at the top of this post there is a hole extending vertically into the post A to near the bottom, into which the rod B telescopes. Upon the top of the rod B is a head E, which prevents the rod B from passing too far down into the post A and also serves as a handle to raise the rod. In the rod B there are one or more hinged or oth erwisesupported hooks D, which when the rod B is closed into the post A shuts into the slots cl. Into the post A is inserted a thumb-screw I-I, which engages with the rod B and holds it at any desired elevation. Upon lthe hook D maybe suspended a fountain-syringe Gr, as shown in closed, as shown in Fig. 2, the operator takes hold of the head E, at the same time unloosens the set-screw H and raises the rod B to the desired height, then tightens the set-screw H. The weight of the hook D will cause it to drop out of the slot d and assume a position shown in Fig.- 1. The operator then hangs upon the hooks D whatever apparatus he desires. After use it is closed by loosening set-screw Hand lowering the rod B, which will close the hooks D into the slots d and pass down into shell A and assume a position shown in Fig. 2.

Heretofore a single separate post has been attached to one end of the bedstead and which is madeverticall y adjustable; but this diers from my invention, in which the regular posts are made hollow and the extensible rod is placed in one of them.

Having now described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat ent, is

l. A hollow bed-post, combined with an ex= tensible rod provided with suitable grooves,` hooks pivoted in the grooves, and which are closed as the rod is telescoped into the post, and means for holding the rod in an extended position, substantially as shown.

2. In a bedstead, the hollow corner-post, combined with the extensible rod B, which is placed therein, and which rod is provided with grooves 3 hooks pivoted in the lower ends of the grooves, and which are made to automatically close as the rod is lowered into the post, and a set-screw which passes through the post, and engages with the rod and holds the rod in any desired position, substantially as described.

. Signedby me,atDubuque,Dubuque county, Iowa, on this 29th day of June, 1808.

JOEL H. GREENE.
