This invention relates to a collar but-ton particularly adaptable for use at the back of acollar and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, 5 a collar button by means of which any collar may be securely held in position without any bulging at the back thereof.
A further object of the invention is to provide a collar button as aforesaid wherein the 1 top or outer flange fits snugly against the inner fold of a collar and wherein the upper or outer surface of said flange is formed with an arc conforming with the arc of a necktie when in position on the neck of the wearer, thereby permitting a free sliding movement of the tie between the folds of the collar and further permitting the tie to be inserted between the folds of the collar after the latter has been secured at both front and back to the neckband of a shirt.
Vith the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more particularly described, and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that such drawings and description are to be taken as illustrative and that the invention is intended to be limited only by the scope of the claim hereunto appended.

A collar button in accordance with this invention consists of a shank 1, a top or outer flange 2, and a bottom or inner flange 3. The shank 1 is of cylindrical form having a uniform diameter throughout and is of a length BUTTON 192-9. erial No. 345,431.
substantially equal to the combined thicknesses of the inner fold 4 of a collar and the outer fold 5 of a neckband, in order that the entire length of the shank may be taken up in its passage through said folds when the collar button is in position.
The top flange 2 is formed with a convexed upper face 6, the arc of which is substantially equal to the arc of a tie, indicated at 7, when the tie in position upon the neck of the wearcr. The lower face 6 of the flange 2 is beveled from the shank l to the peripheral edge 8 of the flange whereby the edge 8 is substantially knife-like to permit the ready insertion of the flange through the button holes 9 and 10 formed in the inner fold 4 of the collar and the outer fold 5 of the neckband.
he bottom flange 3 is of materially greater diameter than the top flange 2 and is slightly cupped to provide a concaved lower face 11, to the arc of which is substantially equal to the arc of the convexed face 6 of the flange 2. The upper face 12 of the flange 3 is beveled from the shank l to the peripheral edge 13 of the flange 3, which, in connection with the oppositely beveled lower face 6 of the flange 2, arovides for an increase in the distance between the flanges from the shank to the peripheral edges 8 and 13, thereby facilitating the insertion of the flange 2 through the collar and neckband.
When the collar button is in operative posi tion, the lower face 6 of the flange 2 is drawn snugly against the inner fold 4 of the collar due to the conformity in length of the shank with the combined thicknesses of the folds 4t and 5 of the collar and neckband and due to the concaved lower face 11 of the bottom flange 3. The contact of the flange 3 with the inner fold 14 of the neckband is adjacent the peripheral edge of the flange and the arc of the fold 14 between diametrically opposite points of the peripheral edge 13 projects slightly into the concavity in the lower face 11 of the flan e 3. In this manner the flange 9 is maintained between the folds 5 0 and l-it of the neckband without the exertion of any outward pressure on the shank l. The peripheral edge 13 1s substantially knife-like to permit the outer fold 5 of the neckband to fit thereover without any outward pressure on the fold 4. With the lower face 6 of the flange 2 thus snugly held against the inner fold l of the collar and merging into the converted upper face 6 to form a substantially knife-like edge 8 and with the convexed face 6 having the same are as the arc of the tie 7, it will be readily seen that the convex face 6 extends substantially in continuation of the outer face of the inner fold l of the collar 10 that the tie 7 may have free sliding movement between the flange 2 and the outer fold 15 of the collar. \Vhile the flange 2 is of materially less diameter than the flange 3, it is of materially greater diameter than the shank 1 whereby the tendency of the flange 2 to slip out of the buttonholes 9 and 10 is eliminated.
In the use of a collar button constructed in accordance with this invention, it has been found that extremely satisfying results may be obtained by constructing the button to have a height of .217 inches, top flange diameter of .425 inches, and bottom flange diam eter of .555 inches. The height of the button is of particular importance as it is highly de sirable to have the entire length of the shank taken up by the inner fold of the collar and outer fold of the neck band.
What I claim is:
A collar button comprising, a top flange for insertion between the button holes of a neck band and collar band, a bottom flange for insertion between the folds of a neck band, and a cylindrical shank of uniform diameter connecting said flanges in opposing relation, the lower face of the top flange being upwardly inclined from the shank to the peripheral edge of the flange, the upper face of the bottom flange being downwardly inclined from the shank to the peripheral edge of the flange,
said top flange having a convexed upper face, said bottom flange having a concaved lower face, each of said conveXed and concaved faces being of substantially the same are as the arc of a tie when the latter is in position on the neck of a wearer, said bottom flange having a substantially knife-like peripheral edge to prevent outward pressure on the outer fold of the neck band, said top flange having a substantially knife-like peripheral edge to provide for the ready insertion of such flange through the buttonholes of the neck band and collar band and to extend substantially in continuation of the outer face of the collar band to provide a smooth seat for a tie.
