A strip of linen or other flexible material 15 is first arranged upon the base 5 in the space between the ribs 8 thereon. The folded sheet of celluloid is then arranged in place and fits snugly in the depression or cavity 6 within the rabbet 7 and with the lower sec tion of the sheet of celluloid at opposite sides of the slot 13 therein extending over and upon the flexible strip 15. A rectangular binder strip 16 also of flexible material similar to the strip 15 is then arranged in position, said binder strip seating upon the surfaces of the rabbets 7 and being of suflicient width to project inwardly therefrom and over the marginal edges of the upper section of the celluloid sheet. The opposite longitudinal portions of this binder strip are integrally connected with each other by the central transversely extending web 17 of substantially the same width as the strip 15 and overlying the lower section of the celluloid sheet at opposite edges of the slot 13 therein and between the opposed edges of the slot in the upper section of said celluloid sheet. The presser head 9 is then brought downwardly under pressure upon the inwardly projecting portion of the flexible binder strip 16 and upon the web 17 thereof, the ribs 10 and 11 of said presser head firmly pressing the binder strip upon the celluloid sheet and also pressing the lower section of the celluloid sheet at opposite edges of the slot 13 upon the fabric strip'15. By any suitable means, the presser head 9 may be heated, or the base 5 may be heated to the required temperature so as to soften the celluloid sheet or render the same sufficiently plastic so that the fabric material will securely adhere thereto.
After the celluloid and the fabric parts have thus been adhesively connected with each other so that the celluloid sheet will be retained in definite relation to the edges of the binder strip 16, said parts are then removed from the base 5 and reversed in position so that the fabric strip 15 is uppermost and then placed upon the metal base member 18. To the opposite side and the end edges of this base member, the presser plates 19 are hingedly connected as at 19, said hinges being located adjacent the upper surface of the base and in parallel relation therewith. The presser plates are preferablyv provided with suitable finger pieces 20 insulated therefrom whereby said plates may be moved from the normal position seen in Fig. 4 of the drawings the celluloid and also over the ends of the transverse fabric strip 15. The base 18 and the plates 19 are also suitably heated so as to cause the inwardly folded marginal edges of the binder strips to securely adhere to the celluloid.
The connected parts are then removed from the base 18 and by means of a sewing machine, a line of stitching is run around the marginal edges, permanently securing the parts of the binder strip 16 on opposite sides of the celluloid to said celluloid sheets. Also similar lines of stitching may connect the fabric strip 15 adjacent its opposite edges to one section of the celluloid sheet at opposite edges of the slot 13 therein. In this manner, it will be apparent that the leaves or inserts each having two pockets with transparent side walls may be easily and quickly made. Such inserts are adapted to be secured in any desired number within an outer cover or holder, the fabric strips 15 and 17 of the several leaves being centrally stitched to said cover or holder.
From the foregoing description considered in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that I have devised a method and means for insuring the accurate and uniform production of such card holding devices, and in view of the simple nature of the apparatus required, it will be apparent that these operations can be executed at nominal cost and without requiring expert skill upon the part of the workman.
I have herein shown and described an embodiment of the apparatus which I have found to be entirely satisfactory in practical use. Nevertheless, it is to be understood that my new method and device for assembling the several parts of inserts for card cases, are susceptible of more or less modification in the form, construction and relative arrangement of the several parts thereof, and I therefore, reserve the privilege of incorporating the essential features thereof in all such alternative mechanical structures as may be fairly embodied within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
I claim:
1. In assembling apparatus of the character described, a base having a rectangular depression in its upper surface and provided centrally thereof with spaced transversely extending ribs and having a continuous rabbet surroundin said depression, the space between said ribs adapted to receive a strip of fabric material, and said depression adapted to receive a folded sheet of celluloid with one part thereof extending upon said fabric strip, and said rabbets providing seats for the outer edge portion of a rectangular strip of fabric binding material adapted to be arranged in superposed relation to the celluloid sheet and having a central transverse web connecting the side portions thereof positioned in the vertical plane of said fabric strip, and a presser plate having a continuous marginal rib and a central transversely extending rib, the latter adapted to engage upon said web and the marginal rib to engage the inwardly projecting portion of the rectangular fabric strip and force said parts under heat and pressure upon the celluloid whereby the several fabric parts are adapted to adhere to the celluloid sheet to thereby con nect the same with the rectangular binder strip uniformly projecting beyond the edges of the celluloid.
3. In an assembling apparatus of the character described, a base having a continuous rectangular supporting shoulder on its upper surface to receive the outer edge of a rectangular binder frame of flexible material having a central transverse web, the other edge of said frame projecting inwardly from the shoulder and overlying a celluloid sheet positioned on said base, said base being further provided on itsupper surface with spaced transversely extending ribs between which a fabric strip is adapted to be positioned, the transverse web of the fabric binder frame overlying the celluloid sheet and said fabric strip, and a presser plate having marginal portions to'engage the inwardly projecting portions of the rectangular binder frame and provided with a central transversely extending rib to engage upon said web and by the simultaneous application of heat and pressure to cause the several fabric parts to adhere to the celluloid sheet and CHARLES LENFA'N T.
