19 having a folded paper cover.
My holding device is particularly adapted to effectively hold either of the aforesaid types of packages, and said holder is so constructed that it may be mounted on any suitable form of base. A further object is to provide a holder construction which may be rapidly and economically produced preferably from sheet metal.
In the accompanying drawings Fig. 1 is a side elevation of my improved match package holder as it would appear in use supporting a box type of match package, the latter being partly broken away and in section;
as Fig. 2 is an end elevation of my invention supporting a paper match packet type of match package;
Fig. 3 1s a frontelevation of my invention in a modified form supporting that type of 7 Fig. 4t is an end elevation of the holder shown in Fig. 3 supporting that type of match package shown in Fig. 1.
In that form of my invention shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the holder is made from sheet metal and comprises a base 1, and two up rising sides 23. The upper ends of these uprising parts are respectively turned in wardly and downwardly as at 23", respeeo tively, to partially reduce the space between said uprising sides and form in effect a slot. t will be seen that the holder is substantially Ushaped in cross section and forms in effect a plug when used in connection with the 5 box type of match box, such as shown in Fig. 1, in which 4 represents the tray part of the match box, and 5 represents the sleeve or cover portion which fits over the tray so as to keep the matches 6 in place. When such a ti; match package is applied to the holder, it is Serial No. 283,098.
placed on the upper end thereof, and the box portion 5 is pushed downwardly over the holder in the manner shown in Fig. 1, so that the holder projects into the lower end of the sleeve-like cover portion 5 after the manner of a plug thus displacing the tray portion 4, so that the matches may be partially exposed as shown for removal. The size and shape of the holder is such that it will fit snugly into the end of the sleeve 5 so that the latter will be held friction-tight thereon. By making the sides 23 of sheet metal, sufiicient flexibility may be provided to assist in this frictional engagement.
In Fig. 2, the match package is of the paper packet type, in which 7-7 represent paper matches and 8 represents a folded paper cover. The coverand the paper matches in this type of package are secured together at the lower end of the package. Since such packages are in such very general use it is highly desirable to provide a holder that will not only properly support the box type of match box shown in Fig. 1, but also the packet type shown in Fig. 2. The match package holder is so constructed that it will not only operate as a plug to snugly fit into and hold the box type as shown in Fig. 1, but the upper end of said plug, being provided with a slot formed by two spaced gripping wallsmay receive and firmly hold a package of the type shown in Fig. 2. Here again the advantage of making the holder yieldable is great, because it is important that the package should be gripped with such firmness. that when the paper matches are torn off, the package will not be unintentionally displaced.
In Figs. 3 and 4 I have shown one modification of my invention, in which 1 is the base of the holder as before. represents one uprising wall from one edge of the base, and represents the other uprising wall from the opposite edge of said base. In this modification the upper end of the uprising wall 30 only is bent inwardly and downwardly as at to reduce the space between it and the wall 20 and form the receiving slot in the upper end of the plug for a match package of paper matches. If desired an opening may be cut in the wall 20, as indicated in Fig. 3, to
expose that part of the paper match package on which the matches are struck, said striking part being indicated at 9 (Fig. 3). In this modified form, the outside dimensions of the holder correspond to the outside dimensions of the holder shown in Figs. 1 and 2, so that it will act as a plug to receive the boX type of match package in the manner shown in Fig. 4, 5 being the cover portion of the match box, the same fitting frictiontight on the outer walls of the holder in the same manner as shown in Fig. 1.
The holder may be mounted on any suitable base. In the drawings, I have shown part of an ash tray 10, which acts as the base, the holder being secured thereto in any desired way, as by means of a bolt 11.
I claim:
1. A holder for two diflerent types of match packages comprising a yieldable plug element U-shaped in cross section, the sides of said holder being adapted to snugly fit within one end of one type of match package. the inner walls of said sides being adapted to snugly fit on the outside of another type of match package.
2. A holder for two different types of match packages comprising a yieldable plug element U-shaped in cross section, the sides of said holder being, adapted to snugly fit within one end of one type of match package the inner walls of said sides being adapted to snugly fit on the out-side of another type of match package, one of the sides of said holder being turned inwardly toward the other side and downwardly between the two sides.
3. A holder for two different types of match aacka es com risin a ieldable alu element.
U-sha ed in cross section the sides of said holder being adapted to snugly fit within one end of one type of match package, the inner walls of said sides being adapted to snugly fit on the outside of another type of match package, the upper ends of both sides being turned inwardly toward each other and clownwardly bet-ween the two sides.
. ROBERT N. BAYLIS.
