Description
NOV 19, l929- l J. GLAENZER 1,736,651
CIGARETTE BOX Filed July '21. 1927 Patented Nov. 19, 1929 PATENT OFFICE JULES GLAENZER, OF NEW YORK, N, Y.
CIGARETTE BOX Application fusa July 21, 1927. serial No. 207,508.
his invention relates to improvements in cigarette box constructions.
rIhe primary object of this invention is the provision of a cigarette box construction in- '5 cluding a plurality of cigarette boxes wit novel means for interlocking the same, it being the intention that the boxes shall be used as individual trophies to be awarded as prizes for different athletic or otherevents, with means by which the boxes may be inter locked together in such relation that they can be-detachably held in row relation, so that access may be had to any particular box desired for removal of the contents thereof.
A further object of this invention is the provision of an improved cigarette box construction, including a plurality of cigarette boxes keyed in a novel relation in rigid relation in the same plane, the boxes being adaptable for use as individual trophies or prizes,
and being detachable so that the same may be properly awarded as prizes for any particular event, and so related that if a particular club wins two or more of the cups, they can s 25 be interlocked in such relation, and the trophies thus serve a useful purpose.
Other objects and advantages of this inventionl will be apparent during the course of the following` detailed description.
11i-the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, and wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
Figure 1 is a plan View, partly in section, a, of three of the improved cigarette boxes held in'an interlocked relation.
Figure 3 is a View looking at the assembled boxes from the lid opening ends thereof.
Figure -1 is a View showing the individual boxes in a detached relation.
Figure 5 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken through a key or joint connection of a pair of the boxes.
Figure 6 is a perspective view of a novel key member adapted to hold a pair of boxes together.
In the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustra-tion is shown only a preferred embodiment of the invention, the letter A may generally designate the improved cigarette box construction, which may comprise end cigarette boxes B and C, and an intermediate cigarette box D, the same being held in a detachable interloclred relation by novel keys E.
The boxes B, C and D in the main are of the same construction, each of the same including a bottom wall 10, having side walls 12, an end wall 13 to which a closure 14 is hinged, and an opposite end wall 15, illustrated in Figure 3 ofthe drawing. Thus the body portion of each box includes a bottoinwith side and end walls, and providing a compartment 2O therein which may be of a sizeto receive cigarettes in any approved arrangement. The closure 14 for each of the boxes includes a top plate or wall 25 with depending side flanges 26, a hinge flange 27 at one end, and an opposite end flange 28 provided witha snap 29 to engage'the top portion of the end wall 15, to hold the same in place yaccording to well known box construction.
In the preferred construction the top portions of the side and end walls 12, 13 and 15 are marginally reduced, as shown at in Figure 5 of the drawing, to receive the re duced depending flanges 26, 27 and 28 of the said box closure 14, so that the outer surfaces of the side and end flanges on the closure or lid 14- will lie substantially -liush with the outer surfaces of the adjacent walls of the body of the box.
The boxes are flat and relatively shallow, being adapted to support cigarettes in a horizontal position. The end boxes B' and C are provided on the facing sides 12 thereof with bayonet slots 40, of T-shaped cross section, which slots extend longitudinally of the-side walls 12, grooved thereinto, from exterior thereof, extending from the rear walls 13 on which said slots outlet, to a point short of the front walls 15, so that the slots 40 terminate short of the lwalls 15.
Inasmuch as the intermediate box B willhave to lock at both sides, each of the side walls 12 thereof is provided with one of the T-shaped slots 40, of the same construction above mentioned, that is opening at ends on the hinge wall 13, and terminating in a dead end just short of the wall 15 from which the box lid opens.
As to the interlocking assemblage of the boxes B, C and D, keys E are provided.
The keys E in cross section are of H shape, the same including strips 42 and 43 connected by a reduced web 44, the strips 42 and 43 being adapted for seating in the main portions of the grooves 40, with the web extending between the grooves of the adjacent boxes. As the grooves 40 open out at the ends 13 of the boxes, the boxes are placed with the outer surfaces of their walls 12 in abutting relation, as illustrated in Figure 5, and the key E is then slipped into the bayonet grooves 40, and the said key then holds them in an interlocked relation, as can readily be understood, against liability of detachment until one of the Vboxes is moved endwise with respect to the other, to edect detachment of one or the other or both of the boxes.
As is illustrated in Figure 5 of the drawing, the boxes B, C and D are keyed together with the outer surfaces of the side walls 12 thereof in an abutting relation. The outer surfaces `of the closure anges 26, are set in slightly so as to provide a clearance 47 between adjacent boxes, which facilitates opening of the closures or lids 14, as can readily be understood from the drawings.
As the boxes B, C, and D are preferably of the same size, they lie in the same plane, and are rigidly connected togetherand can only be detached by relative end sliding parallel with the keys E. 'Ihe closure 14 of course hinges in any approved manner, as by barrel hinges 50 on the walls 13 and 27, after the structure illustrated in the drawings.
The boxes in an interlocked relation provides a series of trophies which may be maintained in an assembled unitary condition, and provide a very much admired trophy for the club, or even for individual use, it being intended to engrave the individual boxes with the particular event for which the box is offered as a prize. The interlocking connection is very compact, andV indeed is invisible unless closely inspected. The plurality of the connected boxes may be used to hold lvarious grades and kinds of cigarettes, so that persons may select the desired brand of cigarette.
Various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of partsmay be made to the form of invention herein shown and de scribed, without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims.
I claim:
1. In a cigarette box construction of the class described a pair of cigarette boxes having side walls and individual compartments therefor, said side walls each being provided with facing key slots of T-shaped section, and a key member of substantially H shaped cross section slidably fitting in said grooves to the boxes in a rigid individually detachable relation.
3. In a cigarette box construction of the class described end and intermediate cigarette boxes including body portions with side and end walls and individual closures therefor, the facing side walls of the boxes being externally grooved in a bayonet slot relation, and detachable keys for interfitting yin said grooves to hold lthe vboxes in assembled interlocked detachable relation.
4. In a cigarette box construction of the class described the combination of end and intermediate cigarette boxes each including individual bodies with individual compartments and individual closures therefor, the individual bodies having side walls, the facing side walls of the boxes being provided with longitudinally extending Teshaped slots disposed thereon, and detachable key members between the side walls .of the intermediate box and the facing side walls of the end boxes interfitting in said slots, said key members being of an H-shaped cross section to interlock the boxes with the facing side Vwalls in abutting engagement.
5. In a cigarette box construction of the class described end and intermediate cigarette boxes having individual compartments, the boxes having side walls, and keys `detachably connecting the boxes in an -interlocked relation with the side walls of the boxes in abutting engagement with the keys secreted therebetween.
6. In a cigarette box construction a pair of cigarette boxes having side walls provided with facing bayonet slots each opening at one end of its respective boxes and terminating in a dead end atvthe opposite end of the box,
,and a key detachably associated with said grooves in a concealed relation therein to hold the boxes 1n an interlocked detachable rigid relation.
