COLLAPSIBLE BOX.
Application filed. December 11, 1925.
Our invention relates to certain novel improvements in collapsible boxes and has for its principal object the production of an article of this character wherein provision is made for folding the box in a flat compact condition to facilitate ret-urn of the same to the shipper.
A further object of the invention is the production of an article Vof this character wherein the panels of the box can be eX- peditiously removed to faciliate folding the box in a flat compact condition..
A further object of the invention is the production of a box of this character which can be expeditiously and readily distended in position to receive articles to be shipped therein.
Other obj ects will appear hereinafter.
rlhe invention consists in the novel coinbination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings showing the preferred form of construction and in which:
" Fig. lis a typical end elevational view of the invention,
F ig. 2 is a sectional View of the same taken substantially on line 2 2 of F ig. 1,
F ig. 3 is a vertical cross sectional the same7 Fig. i is a side elevational view of the invention illustrating the box with the panels and cover thereof removed therefrom,
F ig. 5 is a top plan View of the invention illustrating the box with the cover removed therefrom.
Throughout the several views illustrated in the drawings similar reference characters are used to indicate similar parts.
In attaining the various object-s of the invention, a box is provided with end frames 10 and 11, each of which include angular corner pieces 10 andll having opposite longitudinal edge portions bent upon themselves providing opposite open longitudinal recesses 12 arranged and adapted to removably accommodate end panels 13 and 11 formed of such material as will best serve the purpose.. The inner flanges 15 of these bent edge portions have their lower end portions cut away as at 16 for reasons herein- View yof Serial No. 74,852.
after set forth. rIop connecting strips constitute the top frame members of the end frames as indicated at 16 and are attached to the ianges 15 as at 17 in a manner well known in the art and are provided with end holes 18 in registration with holes 19 formed in the upper ends of the inne-r flanges 15 and Y the outer flanges 20 for reasons hereinafter more fully understood. The end frames are pivotally connected as at 21 to a bottom frame 22. By pivot-ally connecting the end frames to the bottom frame the end frames can be folded upon the bottom frame as illustrated in the dotted lines (Fig. t). This bottom frame includes side pieces 23 and end pieces 24 formed angularly in cross section. The side pieces 23 have their opposite corresponding longitudinal edge portions bent back upon themselves to provide longitudinalprecesses 25 for the accommodation of the longitudinal edge portions of a bottom panel 25 and arranged in spaced relation with outer longitudinal recesses 26 for the accommodation of the longitudinal edges of side panels 27 having their end portions slidably received by similar recesses 28 provided outwardly of the recesses 12 of the corner pieces. The end pieces 24 have their longitudinal portions cut away to provide a longitudinal slot 28 through which the bottom panel 25 is inserted to slidably engage the recesses 25 when mounted in position.
It will be noted that the Vouter flange-s 2O of the corner pieces 11 extend downwardly to a point obstructing passage through the slot preventing self displacement of the bottom panel, and that to. insert the bottom panel it is necessary to partially fold the end frame 11 so as to bring these obstructing end portions from obstructing position with respect to the slot. In this position of the end frame 11 the panel can be expeditiously inserted with its longitudinal edges confined in the recesses 25. After insertion of this panel the end frame 11 is distended to its extreme vertical position with the obstructing end portions in obstructing position with respect to the slot.
The bottom frame 22 has its lower longitudinal edge portion 29 bent upon itself to provide an inner longitudinal recess 29 for the accommodation of the end port-ion 30 of upon themselves to provide longitudinalre' cesses 38 for the reception and accommodation ot' the longitudinal edge portions 39 of a top panel 40. This trame Afurther in cludes end trame members 36 and 36 also angular A in cross wsection;
bent-upon itself to provide' a .longitudinal recess 3,8 for thev accommodation `and reception of the end edge portion 39 ot the top panel. i This end frame member 36V tur-- ther ,deiines alongitudinal recess 4lout- Wardly-int Atherecessh 38.5. for the accommo-V dation :of the upper edge portion 42 of the endpanel 14 Theother endlirame ment ber ivf-lfhasian upper longitudinal portion of its fsideaflange 243 cut `away to provide ai longitudinal slot 44 through which the top panel 40 isi inserted to .be slidably `received byitherecesses 3S,y and the recess 38C is important-to note .thatthefupper edge portion v45,0t the end panel 18 projects up- Wardly inobstructi-ng position with lrespect to thefslot =44 nserving to prevent self-dis placement of vthetopipanel and tliatupper endiiportion oit ithe langcs Gelso-extends upwardly .in obstructing, ,position With this slot; to prevent i unauthorized Withdrawal of thisitop panelTand to rretain tlliefcover panell in position :until th'ecover is removed trom the box` structure. 111 y Y Y *l i The. end: frame members 86 and 3G have apertures .46 `formedtherein Yin registration withf the openings `19 for the 'insertionot suitable ksecuringi meansfi 1 his securing means is not-disclosed nor described in this application :because it does not in itselt constituteia, part. of the present invention.
Fnom the foregoing description it is manifest` that asilongfasthe cover is in positionr the panels cannot be removed.V This results from the fact that the upper flanges ETfoi Y the llanges of the corner piecesV ot the end frame ll project downwardly infobstructing position with respect tothe slot through Which. this panel is inserted :to beslidably The yend trame member 36 has 1ts-long1tudnial edges 37" i a panel sli'dably received -said-othe received b v the longitudinal recesses formed in the bottom trame.
.ln assembling the box structure in distended position the end panel 14 is vmounted in its respective recesses after which the end traine 'll is pivoted about its pivotsto remove the obstructingtiange portions from obstructing the longitudinal recesses ot thebottom frame to permitinsertion ot the bottom panel. After the bottom panel has been mounted in its respective position this end trame is distended to its extreme vertical position atv -whi'clntiine the end panel 13 is mountedin its respective recesses.` The sidelpanelsare now inserted in tl1eir-resp 80( tive recesses aand after thisshasf been afceomplished and contents packed inthe/"boitthus` farsassembled the cover ismounted 'andse` cured in its-.proper position relative 'tothe box structure after theftop paneli thereofhas been inserted through the slotd44intov *A the longitudinal rrecessesot `the cover.-
