DISPLAY-BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 9, 1919.
Application filed July 8, 1918, Serial No. 243,636. Renewed August 9, 1919. Serial No. 316,487.
To all whom it may concem:
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. HARRIS,
a citizen of the United States, and a resi- I is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to display boxes, and has reference more particularly to an independent support adapted to form part of the box and by means of which the merchandise in the box may be presented in a convenient form for display.
An object of the invention is to provide a sim 1e and inexpensive display box which can e manufactured cheaply and in which the support for displaying the box andits contents is provided with means for locking the box to the support when the box is either displayed or transported,
With the above and other objects in view,
the nature of which will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as herein fully described, illustrated and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of the application, similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all th views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the box support. certain parts of which are broken out to illustrate the details of construction;
Fig. 2 is a vertical cross section through the support and the box carried by the suport' p Fig. 3 is a plan view of the blank from which the support is formed;
Fig. 4 is a blank from which the box is formed to be carried by the support; and
Fig. 5 is a sliding housing for the sup port and the box in transit or storage.
I am well aware that there are a large number of display boxes, but in most of them the means for presenting the box in proper position for displaying the merchandise therein have to be folded when the box is in storage or transit. Special instructions are necessary for unfolding the parts which are to form the support, and slits and tongues are generally provided on the folda-ble parts which must be interlocked in a special way before the box can be propped to present the merchandise. The folding parts to be interlocked generally form an intricate arrangement which requires considerable skill and time to properly interengage the parts of the box. Furthermore, it requires the manipulation of the box containing the merchandise and 1n consequence care must be taken not to s 111 the merchandise and thereby injure it.
ften the merchandise is taken out, the box propped, and the merchandise replaced. TlllS inconvenience was always a great drawback to this class of boxes, and the purpose of my invention is to obviate this lnconvenience by shipping the contents in a box propped but'closed and housedduring transportation or storage and which can be immediately displayed by simply removing the housing and raising the cover, thereby dis laying the contents Without any manipulatlon whatever of th propping means or contents of the box.
Referring to the drawings, 7 is the blank of the support in which a panel 8 of rectangular form is bordered by a front panel 9, rear panel 10 and sidepanels 11, each of the panels being folda-ble on scored lines 12 bordering the panel 8. The front and rear panels are rectangular in shape, while the side panels are trapezoidal, the larger bases of the trapezoidals being nearer the rear panel 10. Trapezoidal panels 13 extend'latbases of said panels 13 being remote from the front panel 9. The panels 13 are foldable on scored lines 14 bordering the front panel 9 and form the smaller bases of the trapezoidal panels 13. The straight sides of the panels 13 aline with the. scored line 12 on which the bottom panel 8 and front panel 9 fold.
From one of the larger bases of the panel 13 a rectangular panel 15 extends to fold on the scored line 16 forming the base of the panel 13. The front panel 9. the trapezoidal panels 13 and the panel 15 form a rectangular frame (see Fig. 1) when said panels are folded on their scored lines. To retain th folded panels 9. 13 and 15 in the frame form, a flap 17 is provided at the free' end of the panel 15 whichmay be folded on a scored line 18 and secured to the free end the upper edges of the frame formed by the panels 9, 13 and 15. It will be noted that in the frame the side panels 13 have their sloping sides 19 as the top edges of the frame, while in the side panels 11 of the bottom, the sloping sides 20 form the supporting edges of the bottom; and since the slopes of these sides 19 and 20 are substantially alike, the bottom, when folded into the frame with the edge 20 of the side panels 11 flush with the straight edges of the panels 18, will be disposed in a plane substantially parallel to the plane of the upper edges of the frame.
The so-formed support can, therefore, receive any suitable box having a cover. Preferably a box formed of a blank 21, as shown in Fig. 4;, is used. In this construction the side panels 22, front panels 23, and the rear panel 24 are not provided with the interlocking means, for they) will be maintained one against the other y the frame of the support. The cover 25, which is foldable on a scored line 26 separating the cover from the rear panel 24, may be folded in or out as the case may be. When the merchandise in the box is displayed, the cover 25 is bent to the position shown in Fig. 2.
To render the box neater 1n appearance, the front panel 9 of the support is provlded with a blank 27 folded on a scored line 28 separating the blank 27 from the panel 9 so that the blank 27 can be folded into the box, where it is retained by the merchandise placed in the box. Of course, the provision of the panel 27 is arbitrary. The support with a box may be retained ina housing 29 which form a cover therefor. In this way the box with the merchandise on the support can be easily transported; and when the housing 29 is removed, the cover 25 may be raised, as shown in Fig. 2, and the merchanidise is ready for display, no special manipulation being necessary to prop the box to properly present the merchandise.
In providing an independent support for the box a cheaper stock of paper can be used and a considerable less Waste result in the manufacture of the independent box and support for display purposes as outlined in the above speclfication.
I claim:
1. A display box of the class describedcomprising a box support presenting a frame having rectangular trapezoidal side panels, the sloping sides of said panels forming the upper edges in said frame, front and rear rectangular panels spacing said side panels, a bottom positioned in said frame,
masses extending from the front anel to fold into sloping sides of which panels form the upper edges in said frame, front and rear rectangular panels spacing said side panels, and a bottom posltioned in said frame extending from the front panel toward the rear panel, said bottom having rectangular trapezoidal side panels, the sloping edges of which panels are adapted to form the supporting edges for said bottom when the bottom is positioned in the frame and whereby said bottom is adapted to be maintained substantially in a plane parallel with the plane of the upper edges of the frame.
3. In a display box of the class described, a box support presenting a frame havin a front panel, rectangular trapezoidal side panels extending laterally from the front panel, a rear panel extending from one of the side panels and having means for engaging the other side panel to form a frame, a bottom extending from the front to the rear panel positioned in the frame, and supporting means extending from the edges of the bottom for supporting the bottom within the frame in a sloping position.
4. In a display box of the class described, a box support presenting a frame comprising a rectangular front panel, rectangular trapezoidal side panels extending laterally from the front panel so that the wider bases of said side panels are remote from the front panel, a rear rectangular panel extending from the larger base of one of the side panels, said rear panel having means for engaging the other side panel near the wider base when said panels are formed into a frame, the sloping sides of said trapezoidal panels being adapted to form the upper edges in said frame, a bottom extending from the front panel to the rear panel, rectangular trapezoidal side panels connected to the bottom to fold along the bottom to present the sloping edges of said side panels as the supporting edges for said bottom, and a rear rectangular. panel associated with the bottom adapted to form an additional support for said bottom when the same is positioned in the frame.
