BOXING-GLOVE COVER Application filed September 23, 1924. Serial No. 739,261.
This invention relates to a boxing glove cover and more particularly to a novel and improved sanitary, removable, protector for the outer surface as well as the inner hand grip of the glove.
It is well known that in both professional and amateur boxing contests as well as in gymnasiums, boxing gloves quickly become very unsanitary, by reason of perspiration of the contestants and blood smears, very often causing infection in open cuts. In many instances infections of the eyes have been directly attributed to filthy boxing gloves and rosin used in boxing rings. WVhen the contestants perspire, the moisture soaked gloves causes the rosin and dirt to adhere thereto and when the gloves strike and brush against open cuts, infections are thus caused. My object therefore, is to avoid and overcome the above unsanitary features incident to boxing by providing a removable cover which may be laundered and replaced so that a number of contests may be had with a single pair of boxing gloves by replacing the covers or protectors thereof for each contest.
In order to more fully understand my invention and the construction of the cover or protector, reference is' had to the accompanying drawings, wherein,
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the protector or covering positioned on a boxing glove.
Figure 2 is a view partly in section showing the cover or protector when removed from the boxing glove.
Figure 3 is a front view of the protector.
Figure 4 is a plan showing the protector in its open position before it is placed on the boxing glove.
Referring now to the drawings wherein like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, my invention consists of an outer and an inner covering designated by numerals 5, 6, respectively for covering both the outer surface and inner hand grip 7 of a boxing glove. The outer and main portion 8 of the cover is shaped to conform to the shape of a boxing glove and is preferably stitched along the line 9 to therear face 10 and joined therewith to the thumb cover 11. The rear face 10 above referred to is cut away in V-shaped'formation asat-12 and is provided witheyelets 13 and a draw string 14: whereby it may be drawn taut over-the hand grip 7 of the boxing glove.
In practice, the cover may be of flannel, felt, orother soft material, which may be easily laundered without undue shrinkage and is-of a size slightly larger than the boxing glove.
A wrist covering strip 15 is attached to the bottom edge of the main portion 8 of the cover and attached to the said wrist portion, I have'provided a hand grip covering section- 16', which is shaped to conform to the interior of the boxing gloveand'o-fcourse, is smaller in dimensions than the outer main body portier-i8 heretofore referred to. The hand grip coveringportion 16 is also cut away as at 18 inthe'same' manner as the rear face 10 and being connected therewith, forms an enlarged, substantially elliptical opening as clearly shown byFigure 4, whereby the cover may bedrawn over the surface of: the boxing glove. It will be of, course understood that after the main portion 8 of the cover is slipped over the glove, the hand grip covering section 16 isfoldedback upon itself, thus forming a double thickness for'the wrist covering strip 15 and "the: said grip covering section 16 is positioned within the glove as clearly shown by Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings.
"Aiboxingglove-coverof the above character may be easily positioned on-the glove and removed therefrom, may be turned inside out, when it is beinglaundered and forms a positive protection against infectious causesn After the cover i once-positioned, the draw strings 19 of the boxing glove proper may be also protected by drawing the strings 14 taut and thus prevents the possible injury to the eyes incident to the strings being otherwise loose. Moreover, it will also be recognized that a covering of this character assists in preventing the boxing glove from splitting and causing the loss of the horse hair, cotton wadding, or other filling and the possible contact thereof with the eyes.
While I have illustrated and described my invention with some degree of particularity, I realize that in practice various alterations therein may be made. I therefore reserve the right and privilege of changing the form of the details of construction or otherwise altering the arrangement of the correlated parts without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is 1. A cover or protector of the class described comprising a casing shaped to conform to a boxing glove and adapted to be drawn over the body portion and thumb of the said glove and means attached to the said casing constituting a hand grip protective covering insertible within the body of the said glove. I
2. A cover or protector of the class described comprising a casing shaped to conform to a boxing glove and adapted to be drawn over the body portion and thumbof the said glove, means attached to the said casing constituting a hand grip protective covering insertible within the body of the said glove and means for fastening the said protector when positioned.
3. A cover or protector of the class described comprising a casing shaped to conform to the body of a boxing glove and adapted to be drawn over the body portion and thumb and wrist portion of the glove, a second casing attached to the wrist portion of the first mentioned casing and insertible within the hand grip ofthe glove and means for fastening the cover when positioned on said glove.
4. A cover or protector of the class de scribed comprising a casing shaped to conform to the outer surface and thumb of a boxing glove, a hand grip protecting casing attached to the first mentioned casing, said combined casings being formed with an opening whereby the boxing glove may be inserted and the outer casing drawn over the body portion of the glove and the hand grip protecting casing inserted within the hand a grip of the glove and means for fastening the said protector.
Signed at New York city in the county of New York and State of N. Y. this 3rd day of July A. D. 1924.
