Our invention relates to a new and useful improvement in a basket and supporting apron therefor, and has for its object the provision of a basket adapted for mounting on an apron whereby the load placed in the basket will be supported from the shoulders of the wearer and the strain transmitted in a rearward direction on the shoulders, thus avoiding the tendency to stoop the wearer.
Another object of the invention is the pro-. vision of a basket with an apron for supporting the same in such a manner that a maximum load maybe carried with the greatest ease. f A
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by a reference to the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification and in which, 7
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the apron with a part broken away. I
The invention is designed for use .in the performance of domestic duties and is particularly adapted for use in the laundry as it alfords an easy method of transporting the clothes which have been washed to different locations, the apron serving at other times the usual functions of an apron.
As shown in the drawings the apron comprises a main body 7, projecting upwardly from which is a bib portion 8 having the opening 9 formed therein, through which the head of the wearer may project so that the bib portion may be doubled over as shown in Fig. 1 to engage the upper portion of the back of the wearer. A strap 10 is secured to the upper portion of the bib, the end 11 projecting across the opening 9, as shown in Fig. 2. A strap 12 is also secured to the upper end of this bib portion 8, the end 13 of this strap projecting across the opening 9, as shown in Fig. 2. Each of these straps is doubled upon itself and provided with a buckle 14 serving to retain in position a suitable hook 15. Secured to the forward portion of the body portion 7 is a belt 16 I walls of the basket.
We are aware that previous devices have been provided in which a basket is supported by an apron, but the nature of the apron itself, as well as the supporting straps and their method of extending from the rear to the front at the sides of the body of the wearer so as to transmit the load in a rear ward direction at the upper portion of the back is believed novel, and such as will place the weight more directly on the center of gravity of the wearer, thus relieving the person of the fatigue which would otherwise result. I.
In operation, the head is inserted through the opening 9 and the bib folded as shown in Fig. 1, the straps 10 and 12 being brought forwardly at opposite sides of the body to engage in the eyelets 20. In this way the load is transmitted as mentioned.
The apron is such that it may be worn for A ordinary purposes, the pocket 17 serving as a receptacle for the hooks 15 and 19 when the apron is thus worn.
While we have illustrated and described the preferred form of our invention, we do not wish to limit ourselves to the precise details of structure shown, but desire to avail ourselves of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is;
An apron of the class described, comprising: a main body portion; a bib portion projecting from said main body portion and having an opening formedadjacent its upper end; a pair of flexible straps, each ex tending diagonally across the upper end of said opening and secured to said bib portion; 'a belt secured to said main body portion for extending around the body of the wearer; a strap secured to' said main body portion, centrally of said belt; a hook on said strap; a hook on the free end of each 7 V of said flexible straps; and a pocket mounted on the forward side ofsaid body for recepa dj i kw e jnefi i 1$: In'tesumony whereof We have slgned the foregoing specification.
BONNIE ARMSTRONG.
