COMBINED UTILITY CABINET AND STAND Filed Nov. 15. 1926 Parenteel Nov. 19, 192e STATES COMBINED UTILITY CABINET AND STAND Application led November 15, 1926. Serial No. 148,546.
This invention relates to a combined utility cabinet and stand.
The objects of my invention are to provide a collapsible cabinet comprising corner posts,
e a series of shelves supported therein and a hinged cover for the top shelf, said shelves v bein detachably secured to said posts where-- by the device may be stored or shipped in knockdown condition in order to reduce the l cost of storage and shipping. y
Other objects of the invention are to provide said shelves with center apertures so that the stand may be used as a Christmas tree stand, the basal end of the trunk of the tree 35 being inserted through said apertures.
Further objects of the invention are to form said apertures with annular ilanges and provide said iianges with suitable means for securing the trunk in position therein.
Still further objects of the invention are to form the corner posts with suitable brackets having upwardly presented end-portions spaced from said corner posts and to form said shelves near the corner thereof with .25 suitable openings for receivingsaid upwardi invention consists of certain novel features of constructionl and arrangement of parts, hereinafter more fully described and claimed in the accompanying drawings, in whichy Figure 1 is atop plan view of the stand. Figure 2 is a side elevational view thereof showing the cover removed and the lower end of the Christmas tree in dotted lines eX- tending through the openings in the shelves and secured'in position therein. I Figure 3 is a vertical cross section through the stand showing the cover in raised position.
Figure 4 is a top plan view of the stand with the cover removed.
Figure 5 is an enlarged fragmental view of one corner of the stand.
Figure 6 is a fragmental cross section taken A on lines 6--6 of Figure 5. Figure 7 is a cross sectional detail view of secured in any suitable manner to the corner post 10 and terminating in an upwardly presented end the lrespectlve corner post and terminates slightly before the plane of the upper end of said corner post. The spacing of the end portion inwardly provides a horizontally disposed portion 16 which forms a support for 70 the top shelf 17.l The latter is provided near each corner with an opening 18 through which end portion 15 projects upwardly. Shelf 17 is provided with an upwardly presented marginal iiange 19, fthe corners of which bear '(5 against the inner faces of corner posts 10 when said shelf is placed in position on the posts.
In order to provide a secure interlock between the shelf and the corner posts and elimi- 8o nate play and rattling of the parts, flange 19 is formed in each corner portion with'a horizontally and inwardly disposed protuberance 2O which, when said shelf is in position, engages one side of end portion 15 thereby pro- 85 viding a frictional interlock between the shelf and corner posts 10 and portions 15. `In this manner the shelf and the corner posts are held together without the use of extraneous attaching means. Thecorner posts are maintained in proper position at all times 'and the parts are held against accidental disengagement from each other.
Shelf 18 is provided with a central opening 9 21 having a downwardly presented iarrge 22, the edge of which is rebent as indicated at 22a in order to reinforce said'edge and provide suiiicient amount of metal for receiving screws 24 which latter are screwseated therein 100 portion 15 which is spaced from 66 and have their ends projectinginto openin 21.
he purpose of opening 21 is to allow the 1nsertion therethrough of the basal end of a 5 Christmas tree or a flag pole or the like as 1n-- dicated in dotted lines at Al in Figure 2. When the stand is utilized as a supportfor a Christmas tree, a water container B v1s arranged on the oor so as to receive the end of the trunk.
An intermediate shelf 25 is detachably secured in position a suitable distance below top shelf 17 by brackets 26 which latter are secured to corner posts substantially half way 'between the feet 11 and upper ends of said corner posts. The method of attachment is substantially the same as that of the upper shelf 17 with the exception that in the construction of shelf 25 the edge thereof 1s turned downwardly to form a depending marginal flange 25 which rests on the horizontal portion of brackets 26. Consequently 1t is notnecessary to aperture said shelf. 25. A central opening 27 is formed in said shelf 25 coaxially with opening 21 of shelf 17 and the edge of fiange 28 forming opening 27 is rebent as indicated at 29 and a pair of screws 30 is screwseated in said ange substantially at right an les to screws 24 for engaging mem- 30 ber A. helf 25 serves to reinforce the stand and tie the corner posts 10 at points below shelf 17.
The main portion of shelf 17 is preferably depressed as indicated at 17a so as to provide a5 suitable spaces for storing various articles. When the stand is used as a shoe-shining stand this depressed portion can contain shoe brushes and c ans f shoe polish. A cover 31 is provided for enclosing the upper end of the stand and provide a closure member for shelf 17. This cover which has depending marginal flanges 31a is secured to hinge 'members 32 which are detachably secured by rebent oitions 34 to the upwardly turned marginal flange 19 of shelf 17 Portions 34 are arranged to frictionally hold the flanges in position and are adapted to be disengaged from marginal edge -19 so as to permit the removal of cover 31.
' Shelf 17 is not sufficiently deep to accommodate a bottle of polish or other similar container and I therefore provide supporting means 35 which may be slipped into opening 21 and support a bottle in upright position as shown in Figure 9. This means consists of a pair of U-shaped members 36 having their horizontally disposed uniting portions 37 pivotally connected together as indicated at 38 and having the extremities 40 of their parallel leg portions 39 bent outwardly at right angles so as to rest on the bottom of shelf 17 and support said means 1n said opening 21. When said supporting means are not 1n use means 36 can be folded together on their pivot 38 when stored away for future use.
My utility stand may be also used as a bath stool, in which case compartment 17a can be utilized to hold soap and other articles.
My combined utility stand and cabinet has all of its parts formed of metal, thereby providing strong construction and occupying ver little space. The various parts are detac ably secured together so that the stand can be taken apart. i While I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention, it is obvious that various changes could be made in the construction and arrangement of arts of my device withoutdeparting from t ve spirit of-my invention.
