Patented New. 12, 1929 PHILIP A. BEUTTER, WATERBITRY, CONNECTICUT, ASS-IGNOR T SCO VILL. MANU- FACTURING '(JOIEJPAL'S'EL OE VJATEBBURY, COEINECTICUT, A CORPORATION OF CON-- 1\T EGTICUT VANITY ensu- This invention relates to certain improvements 1n vanityboxes or cases, and particularly to vanity boxes or cases capacitated' to carrya cosmetic in powder form.
These small boxes or cases are now largely used for carrying cosmetics. To produce a saleable article, these boxes should be of attractive and novel appearance, and in boxes intended to carry the cosmetic in powder form 10 the boxesshould be constructed so as to be practically proof against accidental leakage of loose powder. The boxes furthermore should be capacitated to conveniently carry a puff or similar applicator and a mirror arranged conveniently for use. 1
It is the special object of the present invention to provide a vanity box of novel form and arrangement which is attractive in appearance, and in which there is. provided a compartment for holding loose powder, the box being constructed so as to be practically proof against accidental leakage of the powder. As to certain features of the box, this container of a shape generally resembling a watch case, the powder being distributed through the stem of the watch case.
It is a further object of theinventionto produce such a loose powder container in which'an improved means is provided for rendering the box proof against leakage of powder, and in which convenient provision is made-for carrying an'applicator and a ,mirror. 7
With these and other objects not specifically referred to in view, the invention consists in certain novel parts, arrangements and com- .binations which will be described in connection with the accompanying drawings and the novel features pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In these drawings,
Figure 1 is a top or plan view 0 45 proved box;
Figure 2 is an end view or edge view showing the parts closed against the distribution of powder; no Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 show- 59 ing the powder distributor open;
f the imspecial object is carried out by providing a Figure l is a'view similarrto, Figure 1 showing the box open, and y F gure 5 1s a, detall sectional view on an enlarged scale showing theconstruc'tion of the box, the view being taken on line 55 of Y Flgure j u I Referring now. to these drawings, to pro vide a box of noveland attractive appearance, there is shown a box or case whichis generally in the shape of a watch case. While such shape' forms one of the important features of the invention, it will be understood that as to certain other features the invention is not .to be restricted to this form ofbox but that other forms may be used, aswill hereinafter appear. i v
'In the construction shown, however, there isfprovided a box having a body 1 which forms -a'compartment 2 adapted-to contain loose powder, indicated at 3. This box is, as shown inFigures 2 and 3, athin'bo'x circular inform and shaped substantially like a watchcase. The body, ofthe box isprovided-with 5 provided with distributing orifices '6. This head is closed by movable member having distributingorifices this member being in the form of a cap 8 having a skirt or flange Y a lateralhollow stem l terminating in ahead i p 9, which is bent in under the'head 5to rotatably engage thejstem 4. A'stop,as a projection 10" form'ed on the head, may be provided, thi'sstop working in a slot 11, shown in Figure 2, for limiting the rotary movement of the "cap ineither direction.
lVith the construction so far described, the powder is dispensed from the chamber by rotating thefcapto the position shown in Figure 3, whereupon powder may be discharged through the stem by shaking" the In tie construction illustrated, thecham ber 2 is provided with a rather wide inwardlyturned flange or rim 12, shown in Figures 1 and 4:. This rim is formed at its inner edge with a depending flange 13, which ter- Ininates in an inwardly extending shelf or shoulder 14, from which de ends a short vertical flange 15. Supported on the shoulder 14 is a shallow tray having a bottom 16, a short'vertical flange 17 and a horizontal flange 18, the flanges 17 and having a'close friction fit, so that the tray acts as a closure for the powder compartment, which effectually prevents therefrom. This tray is capacitated to carry a suitable applicator in the form of a pufl '19,. The box is closed by a lid, indicated at 18 o'f the, tray. Thus the lid is seated when closed within the flange 12 of the box, so
that the thin a pearance. of the structure is .maintained. vT 1e lid 2Q is preferably pivotally associated with'the box by means of a hinged strap 25. and apintle 26, If desired,
a depression, indicated at 27, may be formed in the rim l2iof the box to provide for read s5 I I with an upstruckportion 8. Similarly, av
removal of the tray, the tra being provide depression29ma be ,rovided forpermitting the ready lifting 'Ort e 1id-20,this1 1 b ngs. provided with an.- n struck portion 30,
With the constructlon shown described, it will be clear that a box of novel form has been provided and one in which loose powder may be confined against accidental leakage and may at the same time be readily disp rensed for use.
' W hile the'invention has been "shown and described in its preferred form and arrange.
ment of the parts, it will be understood that certain changes and variationsmay be made in thestructure shown and described with out departing from the invention, and as to certain feature sthe invention 'maybe used with containers or boxes other than those of a watch case form.
