UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIoE.
CHARLES K. HOWE, OF HALLOWELL, MAINE.
IMPROVEMENT lN CARTRIDGE-BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 173,54 3, dated February 15, 1876; application filed January 15, 1876.
.To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES KIMBALL HOWE, of 'Hallowell, in the county of Kennebee and State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cartridge-Box, of which the following is a specification Figure 1 is a front'view of my improved cartridge-box, part being broken away to show the construction, and shown as applied to the shoulder-rest of a pocket-rifle. Fig. 2 is a detail section of the same, taken through the line mm, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved cartridge-box, which shall be so constructed as to allow only one cartridge to be taken out at a time, which may be attached to the shoulder-rest ofa pocket-rifle, carried in the pocket, or in any other convenient receptacle, and which shall be simple in construction and convenient inuse. The invention consists in making a cartridge-box of a ring-flanged block, having holes (for the cartridges) in different radial planes, and covered by a slotted centrallypivoted disk, that has a flange overlapping the flange of block.
A is a circular block of wood, of athickness a little greater than the length of the cartridges to be carried. In the face of the block A are formed two or more circles of holes or cells, a of such a size that the car tridges may fit into them, and which are so arranged that no two holes may be upon the same radial line.
The face of the block A is recessed, so as to leave a ring-flange around it of a height equal to the thickness of the flange of the cartridge-shells.
The face of the block A is covered with an elastic metallic disk, B, which rests upon the ring-flange of the'said block A, and has a flange formed around its edge to overlap the edge of the block A.
The disk or cap-plate B is secured and pivoted to the center of the block A by a screw,0, which screws into a block,D, of hard rubber, secured in a hole in the center of the block A.
The hard rubber D holds the screw firmer than wood or iron would, and prevents it from moving when it has been long used, as it does not become loose.
- The block D may be made of other material than hard rubber, and the screw 0 may be extended through the block A, and have a pinch-nut screwed upon its end, if desired.
In the under side of the cap-plate B, near its edge, is formed a circle of indentations, 12 in such positions and of such a number that an indentationmay be in the same radial line witheach hole of the block A.
To the block A is attached a pin, M, to enter the indentations b and thus hold the plate B from being accidentally turned.
In the disk B is formed a scalloped radial slot, W, of such a size that a cartridge may pass through it.
With this construction, as the disk B is turned the space of each indentation b the slot I)? comes over a hole, c of the block A, so that by inverting or inclining the device a cartridge will drop out, and may be received in the hands.
By this construction, by tightening or loosening the screw (1, the disk B will be tightened or loosened upon its seat, as may be desired.
The cartridge-box thus constructed may be inserted in the cavity of the shoulder-rest E of a pocketrifle, or it may be carried in the pocket or in any other convenient receptacle.
Having thus described my invention, I claim'as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, in a cartridge-box, of the ring-flanged block A, having holes in different radial planes, with the slotted and therein 7 centrally-pivoted disk B, resting upon and having a flange that overlaps that of block, as and for the purpose specified.
CHARLES KIMBALL HOWE. Witnesses:
