UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES DE QUILLFELDT, on NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOTTLE-STOPPERS.
Specification formingpart of Letters Patent N 0. 173,533, dated February 15, 1876; application filed January 7, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES DE QUILL- FELDT, of the city, county, and State of New sponding parts.
. My invention relatestoan improved bottlestopper of simple and durable construction, that may be opened and closed with great facility; and it consists of an elastic stopper applied to a solid cap-piece, and hung by a curved slot to a yoke pivoted at the neckband. A lever-bail, pivoted to the cap-piece below theslot, acts on the yoke, and raises it to the uppermost part of the slotted cap-piece, to secure thereby the stopper to the neck.
In the drawing, A represents a bottle, to the neck-band B of which the yoke Ois pivoted, in the customary-manner. The yoke O passes with its upper or bridge part through a slotted cap, D, cast of suitable metal, which is thus loosely hung to the yoke. The slot a, in which the yoke slides, may be made of inclined or curved shape, extendingv at its highest point somewhat beyond the vertical axis .of the cap, so that when the yoke is carried into the uppermost corner of ,the slot the cap,
is firmly and tightly secured on' the neck'ot' the bottle. A stopper, E, of rubber or other elastic material, is applied to the under side of the cap-piece, and made to fit tightly on the neck when the cap is depressed by the yoke. The yoke G is raised in the slotby a lever-bail, F, that passes through a lateral perforation of the cap-piece below, and slightly in front of, the uppermost corner part of the 7 slot, the swinging of the bail in upward direction producing thereby thesea-ting of the yoke in the uppermost part of slot a, slightly sidewise of the vertical axis, so as to retain the cap rigidly until the yoke is released by being pressed in forward direction. The bail fits to the neck of the bottle, fnrnishingthereby, together with the round cap and yoke, no pro 'ecting parts or corners, which render the handling of the bottle difficult.
The raising of the bail closes the stopper, and the releasing of the yoke opens the same, forming thus a simple, durable, and cheap bottle-closing device.
The bail is of such, length that it supports the stopper when the bottle is opened on the neck, as shown in Fig. 3, serving to retain the same rigidly in this position for-emptying the bottle without interfering with the pouring out of the liquid. 1
.Having' thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- V 1. In bottle-stoppers, the combination ota swinging yoke, a loose cap-piece having stopper-and curved slot, and a swinging lever-bail, pivoted to the cap-piece below the upperv end of the slot, to be operated substantially as specified. 4
2. In-bottlestoppers, a lever-bail pivoted to cap-piece, and swinging with yoke into open well as stopper, and'thus retain the stopper at one side of the neck, as and for the purpose specified.
