Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
W. c. EUssELL, or NEW YORK, N. Y., AssIcNon 'ro IIIMsELE AND WILLIAM sEWELL.
COMBINED LANTERN AND OIL-CAN.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l 7.35 l, dated May 19, 1857.
To all whom, it may concern:
3eV it known that I, WILLIAM G. RUssELL, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented, made, and applied to use a new and useful Illuminated Oil-Can; andI do hereA by declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part of this specification, in which a vertical section of my illuminated oil-can is represented.
In oiling machinery a large amount of oil is wasted from being unable to see the exact place where to pour the same; hence, even in daylight, it is often necessary for an engineer or machinist to carry a lamp in one hand and the oil-can in the other, in order to see where to apply the oil. This is both difficult and dangerous, particularly when the machinery is in motionsuch as on a Steamship or locomoti ve-and the narrow places that machinists have to reach through or pass over` render it imperative, for their personal safety, that one hand be at liberty to hold on by while the other is used in oiling the machinery, andthe want o'i'light i'or directing where to pour the oil has induced me to construct an illuminated oil-can, by which the attendant only requires one hand for the oil-can, while the other can be used for holding on by, which is of vital im-4 portance, particularly on seagoing Steamers and locomotives, and for the want of which device many personal injuries have been sustained, because persons have slipped with a light in one hand and the oil`-can in the other, and before they were able to seize any stationary object have been caught bythe machinery.
In the drawing, a is an oil-reservoir,with the handle b and feeder c, of any desired size or shape. d, is a separate oil-receptacle, with a Wick and burner, e, of any desired character, over which is the shade or globe f, hinged on by the handle b, so as to throw back, or the said shade or cover might be attached byany convenient means. hen character of the oil used for the machinery answers for burn ing, the wick may pass directly into the can.
A feed-hole or plug is seen at g for filling the oil-can.
I do not claim either a lamp or an oil-can; but in view of the new and useful result obtained and the security for life and limb by my illuminated oil-can, I
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As a new article of manufacture, the attachment of a lamp or light to an oil can or feeder for illuminating the place to be oiled, substantial] y as and for the purposes specied.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my signa-ture this 15th day of April, 1857.
XV. G. RUSSELL.
