Description
W. W. WADE.
Lamp Burner.
No. 20,748.. Patented June 29,1858.
coo 000 O c l] UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IV. W. WADE, OF LONGMEADOW, MASSACHUSETTS.
METHOD OF FASTENING THE WICK-TUBE IN LAMP-CAPS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 20,748, dated June 29, 1858.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVILLIAM VADE, of Longmeadow, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and improved method of fastening the wick-tube and the spindle with rucked wheels for raising and depressing the wick in lamp attachments; and I hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description.
The nature of my invention consists in cutting the slot by which the wick tube passes through the top and bottom of the shell, with a groove at each end outward, into which the wick tube fits with such accuracy as to preclude any motion horizontally. Upon the tube I raise two beads or shoulders at such distance apart that, when the tube is in place, one shoulder is immediately below and within the top of the shell, and the other is immediately above and within the bottom of the shell, the two preventing any motion of the tube up or down.
The spindle by which the wick is raised or depressed is fastened by being extended quite across from side to side of the shell through holes of suitable size made for the purpose; the wheels for raising the wick working into the tube through an aperture made for the purpose, prevent the spindle from slipping out of place.
The usefulness of my invention consists in obviating the necessity for using solder to fasten the wick tube and the spindle; it
having been found that the heat from the combustion in the ordinary use of the lamp is sufiicient to melt the solder, and render frequent repairs necessary.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1, is a side view or elevation of the attachment. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 a horizontal section.
In Fig. 1 B B is the spindle for raising and depressing the wick, resting and running upon the opposite sides of the shell.
In Fig. 2 B B is the spindle, with the rucked wheels working into the wick tube through the aperture K K L L are the beads or shoulders in the wick tube, which prevent it from slipping up or down.
In Fig. 3 M M is the slot grooved outward, by which the wick tube passes through the top and bottom of the shell, fitting into the grooves so accurately as to prevent any horizontal or lateral motion.
What I claim as my invention and de sire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The method of fastening the wick tube and spindle for raising and depressing the wick in lamp attachments, without the use of solder, in the manner above described. I claim no other part of the attachment.
WILLIAM IV. IVADE.
