IMPROVED PORTABLE DRESSING-CASE.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 3S, l 30, dated April 7, 1863.

Be it known that l, J oHN RUSSELL, a citin zen of the United States of America, and a resident of Boston, in the county of S'uolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Port-able Dressing-Gase or Apparatus for the Use of Soldiers and Travelers; and I do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure 1 is a top view, Fig. 2 a 'front elevation, Fig. 3 a side elevation, and Fig. 4 a vertical section, of my said invention.

In such drawings, Arepresents a cylindrical cup or vessel, provided with a cover, B, and a folding handle, O. The said cup has its external surface provided with two fillets, a a, which extend around it and project from it.

Wrapped around the outer surface of the cup. and between the fillets is a metallic spring plate or jacket, D, which is held in place by means of a clasp, b, and its catch d, applied to the two ends of the jacket, respectively. By compressing the jacket, so as to liberate the clasp from its catch, the jacket can be removed from the case and may be used for a tablet for the support of a sheet of paper while the same may be in the act of receiving writing. The said jacket is furnished with a series of sockets, c c c c, for holding a folding spoon, e, a folding fork,f, a folding knife, g, and a razor box or holder, h, the same being arranged in the jacket as shown in the drawings.

On the top of the cover B is a lamp, E, between-whose two wick-tubes, il t', and on the top of its oil-reservoir k, there is placed a box,

F, for holding a portable inkstand, G, or a matclrsaie, or other matters, as convenience may require. On the cover l of the box `F there is a Candlestick, M, composed of a socket, m, and a drip-cup or receiver, n.

Within the case or vessel A there is a box, H, for holding a blackingbox holder, o, two brushes, p q and an annular threadspool, r. The two brushes, p g are respectively affixed to the body s and cover t of the holder or box o, and project in opposite directions from one another. The holder is intended to holda box, u, containing blacking. The spool r is a grooved annulus, which encircles one of the brushes and may have thread of diierent kinds or colors wound upon it.

Beside the box H, the case A may have within it not only another box, I, for holdingV other articles, but a mirror, K, and a pinholder, L.

The apparatus above described is a very portable arrangement and combination of various utensils and implements necessary to travelers or soldiers. The utility and use of each article mentioned in the collection being known, it is not necessary to further specify them.

I claim- The above-described apparatus, consisting of the socketed springjacket D, and vessel, cup, or case A, constructed in manner and so as to contain or have combined with it articles, substantially as specied.
