Description
P. NOYESQ Lamp.
Patented July 28, 1868.
N. PYETERS. PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER, WASHNGTOM D I gfl nh' figment @ffite,
Letters Patent No. 80,302, dated 28,1868; imtedated Ji dy 11,1868. l I
mmovsmEm IN LAMPS;
tithe 5 mm refemt in in time Z ettets' what ant mating pm the smite} TO ALL WHOM IT MAY oononnN v Be it known that I, PEBSON'NOIES, of Lowell, in the county of Middlese'x, and State of Massachusetts,
have invented certain new and usefullImproveuients in Lamps,'of which the following is a full,.clear, and exact description, refereucebeing had to the accompanying drawings, making part of thissp'ecification, in which-- i Figures land 2 are vertical centralsectiona Figure 3}? side elevation, and
Figure '4 a top view of a detached cap-holder'which slides on over thejacket. y
This invention consists, first, in the use and applicationto the top of the wick-tube of a lamp which-has an outer jacket-sleeve, or other similar or analogous device for regulating the flame ofa movable cap or stopple,
a, which slides down, over, and outside of the top end of the wick-tube b, in the form of a tube or tubular cap, or inside of the wick-tube in the form of a stopple, and, when applied as above stated, there is a collar-or flange,
e, projecting outward all around the cap or stopple, which collar -re sts"on the top-endof the outer jacket 1,
fitting closely thereto. I l
This cap oi stopple not only closes the top end of the wick-tuhe andjacket tight and close, but gives the V top end of the tubes a morefinished and ornamental appearance.
This cap oristopple prevents ofiensive odors rising from the charred end of the wick, so common with lamps of the class here shown. V i I My invention also consists in the employment ofva' suitable cap-holder, O, a top view-oi" which is shown in fig. 4. This cap-holder is made in the form of a larger and a smaller washer fitted together ed'gewise, the larger hole, e, fitting the outside of the jacket d; whereitmay'be mov able, or secured to the jacket, and thesmallef hole, a, is for the reception of the cap ,or stopple tl when ,not in use, or applied to the top end'of the wick-tube andjacket. y V Y 1' The object ofthis invention will be easily seen. When the flame is extinguished, the cap or stopple a is applied to the top end of the nick-tube and jacket, either over the outside of the wick-tube orwithinit, the collar, c, fitting on the top end of the jacket, thus'stopping evaporation offluid, or escape of offensive odor from the charred end of the wick, l i
'When the lamp is lighted, the cap. or stop ple a j e placed in the hole e of the cap-holder, which keeps it protected,-or from being accidentally caught and disengaged fromthe lamp, the chain broken. or the occurrence of any other accidentto the cap or chain. I
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to 'secuifea-liy Iietters Patent, is- The use and application ofn cap or stopple, a,.to the top end of-the wick-tube of a lamp which has an outer jacket, sleeve, or other similar or analogous device,. when said cap or stoppie is constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose set'forth.
