Description

J. M. smi-:LDS DISPLAY PAD FOR JEWELRY BOXES AND THE LIKE ANDMETHOD OF' FORMING THE SAIE Nov. l2, 1929.
Filed Aug. 14, 1929 Patented Nov. 12, 1929 l UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE JOHN M. SHIELDS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNORKTO F. N. NOBLE & CO.,y OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS DISPLAY PAD FOR JEWELRY BOXES AND THE LIKE AND METHOD OF FORMING THE SAME y Application led August 14, 1929. Serial No. 385,848.
In the merchandising of small ornamental articles for personal f use or wear, such as watches, jewelry, automatic pencils, fountain pens, and many other articles of various kinds, the articles are often offered for sale, or delivered to a customer in an ornamental box or case provided with a bottom pad orsupport covered with fabric of ornamental appearanceto effectively display the article and increase its attractiveness. Such a pad is frew quently made removable, and it is often pro- Hvided with clips for holding the article to be displayed in position upon the pad.
In order to increase the attractiveness of the pad it is desirablethat it shall be provided with a superposed covered marginal portion, which may be of a different color than the central display field, and in all prior f pads so constructed that are known to me, this has been accomplished by covering the central or display field as a complete separate unit, and applying to it a complete separately covered rim, the pad consequently presenting a seam at itsedges between the two fabrics.
My present invention relates to a pad ofk novel construction which I have devised for containers of the character referred to, and the object of the invention is to provide a pad constructed as a single unit, having a covered central field and a superposed covered border, the fabric of which may bediferently colored and extends down entirely around the edges of the pad, and which is of simpler construction and capable of being more readily and economically manufactured than any pad presenting a similar appearance on its exposed face heretofore known in the art. With these ends in view I have devised and invented the novel display pad and the method of forming the same hereinafter de- `strueted in f inverted position.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the frame member of such marginal portion;
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the covering for the central field of the pad;
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the body member of the pad;
Fig. 6 is a longitudinal central section of the pad; and
Fig. 7 is a similar section of a slightly different form of pad, suitable for the display of a belt buckle, as illustrated.
Like reference characters indicate like parts on all the figures of the drawing.
The construction of my novel display pad may be best understood by a description of the procedure followed in forming it. A. blank l of fabric forming the facing of the raised border portion of the pad, and which may consist of velvet or other ornamental fabric, or imitation leather or ornamental paper, is laid face down upon a suitable support. This facing, it will be noted (see Fig. 2) is formed with slits 2 at the corners of its central opening and with notches 3 at its corners to permit it to be folded ion the in ner dotted lines 4L and outer dotted line 5 indicated. A border frame member 6 is now laid down upon the fabric in position to register with the dotted lines referred to, and the inner portions of the fabric brought then up around the inner edges of the member 6 and cemented to the uppermost face thereof. r)She facing fabric 7 of the central `field of the pad, ordinarily velvet, is then laid face down over the folded edges Vof the material l, and the ybody member 8 of the pad then cemented to the Velvet, and the marginal portions of the border facing material l are then brought around the edges of the assembled parts and cemented downupon the uppermost face of the said body member. If desired, however, the velvet facing 7 and body member 8 may first be cemented together and then laid down as one upon the partially folded parts 1 and 6, instead of applying them separately as above described. A finishing sheet of thick paper or cardboard 20 is preferably cemented to uppermost face of the body member 8 to finish the pad, which as described is conrIhe particular' nad illustrated in Figs. l to 6, which has just been described, is intended to support a Wrist Watch provided fith a strap, andthe velvet member 7 is consequently provided with an opening 9 through which one strap section may be inserted into the central cut-out opening lO in the body. As shown in Fig. l the pad is placed in a case or Abox ll, the construction -30 of which, however, forms no part of my presentV invention. Y,
In Fig. 7 l have shown in cross-section a form of box which diders from that above described only in proportions, and in the employment of a body member, marked 12, which is continuous from edge to edge and not cut out at its center,- and is provided at suitable points With fastening clips for securing the parts of the buckle to the face of the pad.
ln the commercial production of my novel display pads on a large scale, l have found it economical and advantageous to form the frame member 6 and body member 8 from heavy card board which has been coated on one side With adhesive and then dried, and to form the fabric members 1 and 7 from material tothe back of which a similar adhesive has likewise been applied and permitted to dry, the adhesive being of such nature that it will be softened, and become adhesive when heated. By means of suitablyactuated heated metal dies the parts of the pad can rapidly be united as above desc ibed 5 I claim: Y
l. A display pad for jewelry boxes and the like comprising a body member, a central facing superposed on said body member, a
border facing and a border frame member, the inner edges of the border facing being interposed between said bodyrnember and Said border frame member and the material of such border facing extending over the tou of said border frame member around tno r er edges of both said border Vframe memberand said body member and being cemented to the bottom face ofsaid body member.
A display' pad for jewelry boxes and the likel comprisin'fr av body member, a central cing superposed on said body member, a l cQ-,r facing, `and a border frame member,
` ner edges of the border facing Vbeing sed between said body member and border frame member and being cesaid mented to said border frame member, and the material of such body facing extending over the top of said border frame me iber around theouter edges of both said border frame member and said body member and bei-ng cemented to the bottom face of said body member.
A display pad for jewelry boxes and the like comprising a body member, a central facing superposed on said body member, a border facing, and a border frame member,
the. inner edges of the border facing being interposed between said body member and said border frame member and the material of such border facing extending over the top of said border frame member around the outer edges of both said border trame member and said body member and under the marginal portion of the lower face of said body member, and the contacting horizontal faces of said body member and central facing, and of said border frame membery and said border facing, and of said border facing and said body member being cemented to gether.
il. The method of forming a display `pad having a border Which consists in superposing a. centrally cut-out border frame member on a larger cut-out blank of flexible border facing` material, then folding the inner edges of said material around the cut-out opening of the border frame and cementing them to said frame, then superposing a central facing on said cemented parts and a body member on said central facing, and finally folding the outer portion of said border facing!I material around the edges of said border frame and central facing and body member and cementing the marginal portions of such material to the marginal portion of the lower face of said body member.
ln testimony whereof, I have subscribed my name. Y e j JOHN M. SHIELDS.
