to be used in' lieu of a number of separate pieces of furniture of like character to accomplish the purposes thereof, yet it has the advantage of the small cost of producing a single piece and the convenience of fered thereby.

A further object of the invention is to provide a novel drawer and trayoperating and latching means that is to some extent automatic in its action.

This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts to be hereinafter fully described, illustrate in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.

In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying draw.- ings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the piece of furniture which forms the subject matter of the present invention.

Referring to the drawings in detail the reference numeral 1 indicates the back of .l view taken on line the body of the piece of furniture as shown, and 2 and 3 the sides of said body which is provided with a centrally arranged horizontally disposed partition 4 and a similarly arranged vertically disposed partition 5 to divide the body into separate upper compartments and separate lower compartments as clearl shown in Figure 2 of the drawings. T e upper compartments are further divided by vertical partitions 6 into inner compartments 7 and outer compartments 8- and 9. Each of the lower compartments is also furtherdivided by horizontal partitions 10 to form drawer spaces and also sub-compartments 11 and 12. Shelves 13 are centrally arranged in the outer compartments 8 and 9 and tray members 14 and '15 are slidably mounted thereon. The tray members each include a back, sides and bottom and arranged in the tray member 14 are smoking articles such as match holders, an ash tray, a'cigar cutter and a holder for cigars and cigarettes, while the tray member 15 has arranged thereon and secured.

Received in thedrawer spaces are drawers 16 which together with the tray members 14 and 15 are each provided with partly automatic closing and latching means which include a U-shaped handle with its bight portion 17 received for operation in a recess 18 which is formed in the front of each 1 drawer and tray member as shown and the arms 19 of the U-shaped handle are mounted for slidable movement through the front and also in bearing plate 20 secured to a false bottom of the drawer and tray members. The inner ends of the arms are secured to a rectangular plate 20 which is provided with converging slots 21 to slidably receive the upturned ends of oppositely projecting links 22 which have secured adjacent their upturned ends abutments 23 for receiving one of the ends of and to limit the movement of coil springs 24 surrounding the links and which have their opposite ends engaging the eyed ends of keepers 25 for cooperating with the heads 26 of said links for operatmg said keepers which are provided with upon the U-shaped hand tapered ends 27 adapted to be passed through slots 28 formed in the opposite side wa ls of the drawers and tray members and to be received in notches 29 formed in the opposite side walls of the drawer spaces and outer compartments 8 and 9, when the drawers and tray members are arranged in their open position as suggested by the drawer in Figure 6 of the drawings. From the construction of the novel 1 tching means just described, it will be obgi dusthat a pull of one of the drawers or tray members will arrange the keepers thereof to operative position and dispose said drawer or tray member to an open position with the keepers arranged in the notches 29. living room of a household and the like and will take the place of a number of pieces of furniture such as a sewing cabinet, smoki stand, writing desk or abufl'et, and the drawers and tra members include means for automatically ocking them in open position to prevent the same from falling from their respective places, and also with means for automatically closing said drawers and trays when the latchin means are released.

I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.

What I claim is:

A cabinet of the character described comprising a body including a back, sides, a top and a bottom, braced legs for said body, a horizontally disposed partition arranged centrally in said body, tically disposed partition in said body and together with the horizontally disposed partition dividing the body into upper and lower compartments, vertical partitions cooperating with the vertical partition first mentioned and dividing the upper compartment into inner and outer compartments, shelves centraladapted to receive stationery and the like y arranged in Outer compartments, y

The sub-compartments 1-2 are also closed by hinged doors 39 formed with rounded lower ends to correspond with the lower ends of the sides 2 and 3 as best shown in Figure 1 of the drawin and these sub-compartments are adapts for the purpose of receiving medicine and music rolls respectively. Arranged in the s ace below the top 40 which may be formed of marble or the like is a sliding extension shelf 41 to provide among" other things a writing board. A lamp bracket 42 rises from the top 40 as best shownin Figure 1 and includes s aced parallel arms terminating in opposite y disposed downturned curved portions to receive electric lamps. Disposed between the arms at the juncture of their curved portions is a block 43. A switch controlled electric lighter for pipes, cigars and cigarettes as well as other purposes is indicated by the reference numeral 44 and is normally arranged in a hanger 45 extending laterally from the side 3. A conductor 46 supplies electric energy for the lighter 44 and is in electrical connection with the conduit 47 which supplies current to the lamps from a house system or other suitable source of electric energy.

The body is supported by tapered legs 48 having suitable cross braces 49 and 50.
