1 1 I l l I I I I 1 I I I I I I I I I I I I 0 I Patented Feb. 4, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 JOHN E. YATE S, OF HARVEY, ILLINOIS I PORTABLE FILE AND STATIONERY CABINET Application filed March 29, 1929. Serial No. 350,986.
v the device constructed in the form of a cabi-,
' 1 net for containing ofiice stationery, books or fice desk, the file receptacle and cabinet will provide aconvenient' repository for all papers, files and the like and thus prevent an accumulation thereof upon the desk. I
One of the important objects of the in- Vention is to provide a combination file holder and cabinet of this character of a convenient size so that the same may be easily moved from place to place about the office upon rollers o r casters.
A further object of the invention is to provide, an article of this character of a simple and practical construction, which is neat and attractive in appearance, which may be manufactured at a relatively low cost and which at the same time is strong and durable, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the special construction, combination and arrangement of the various elements forming the invention as more fully hereinafter de scribed and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevational view of one form of the invention, Figure 2 is a vertical transverse sectional View therethrough, I t
Figure 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the file holder or receptacle,
Figure 4 is a frontelevational view illustrating a modified construction for the lower portion of the article,
Figure 5 is a vertical transverse sectional view therethrough and Figure 6 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the file holder or receptacle of such modified form of the invention.
the like, so that when placed adjacent an of- Referring to the drawings in detail, the invention comprises an article of furniture including a base 5 having upstanding end walls 6-, the base being mounted upon a set of rollers or casters 7 to facilitate the movement of the device from place to place.
' A shelf 8 is supported at its opposite ends by the end walls 6 at a point intermediate the upper and lower ends of said walls.
The upper ends of the end walls 6 are notched in a-manner as more clearly illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawings with the base of said notched portion, indicated at 9, forming a support for the bottom 10 of an open file tray or receptacle shown generally at 11-. The side walls 12 of the file tray are of a substantial depth and incline upwardly and outwardly in conformity with the degree of inclinationof the notched vertical edges of the end walls 6 so as to provide a snug fit therewith.
7 One end of the file tray may be opened, as will be seen from an inspection of Figure 3 of the drawing. In the form of the invention illustrated in Figures 1 to 3 inclusive, front and rear walls 13 and 14 respectively extend upwardly from the base 5 with their upper edges terminating at a point substantially below the shelf 8. The front and rear walls and the side walls thus cooperate to form a receptacle at the bottom portion of the device within which books or various other articles of stationery may be placed. As best seen in Figure 1 of the drawing, the open end of the trough 11 extends beyond the respective end wall 6 and said trough may be of any desired length. In the form of the invention illustrated in Figures 4: to 6 inclusive, the front of the device is provided with a pair 90 of hinged doors 15, in lieu of the front wall 13, each of said doors being hingedly at tached to the respective end walls 6 and are provided with handles 16.
A rear wall 17 also extends the full length of the doors in place of the relatively short rear wall 14: as shown in Figure 2. A top 18 is supported upon the rear wall 17 to entirely enclose the lower portion of the device and thus form the same substantially into a cabinet within which various articles of stationery may be placed.
In the form of the invention illustrated in Figures 4 to 6 inclusive, the file tray or holder 11 rests upon the top 18 of the cabinet and is provided with handles 19 at the front and rear sides thereof to enable the file tray to be entirely removed therefrom.
It willbe understood that the various parts entering into the construction of the device 'may be secured to each other in any suitable manner well known in the art, such as for in- 7 stance by nailing, gluing or the like, or when the device is constructedof metal, the parts may be welded, riveted orrotherwise secured to each other. 7
It is obvious that my invention is susceptible to various changes and modifications in construction without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claim, and I accordingly claim all such forms of the device to which I am en- Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
A combined cabinetand file holder of the character described comprising a base, a pair of opposedendwalls extending vertically from the opposite ends of the base having notched upper ends, the bottoms of said notches being horizontally disposed and, the side walls thereof diverging upwardly, and a trough disposed in the notches comprising a horizontal bottom, upwardly diverging front and rear walls and a vertical end wall,
said trough being open at its top and one-end and of a cross-sectional shape conforming substantially with the notches, the closed end of the trough being disposed in the vertical 7 plane of the respective end walls and the open end of said trough extending laterally beyond the respective end wall.
In testimony whereof I aflix mysignature.
JOHN E. YATES.
