,IMPROVEMENTVIN SCHOOL DESKS AND SEATS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. P73340, dated February 8, 1876; application filed July 19, 1875.

Tov all whom it may concern:

Beit known that we, GEO. W. PUTE'RBAUGH and ALFRED E. TEAL, of Greenlield, in the county of Hancock and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in School-Desks; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full', clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon', which form a part of this specilication.

The nature of our invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a'schooldesk, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In the annexed drawing, Figure 1 is a transverse vertical section of our school-desk. Figs. 2 and 3 are detached views of parts thereof'.

The side pieces of our school-desk are each formed of two legs, A A, which cross each other above the lower edge of the back of the seat, and are halved into each other. B is the book-case, fastened between the legs, and G is the top, resting thereon. In the front angle of the legs A, on each. side, is a brace, D, which forms a support for the back E, and also serves to prevent end shake on the desk. The lower end of the brace is mitered onto the front leg, and doweled at a. The upper end of the brace is halved onto the inner side ofthe upper end of the rear leg', and lies against the end of the'book-case B, all three pieces being bolted and screwed firmly together.

rllhe back E is made, as usual, of several pieces, the lower piece E ot' which is made of thicker lumber than the balance, to allow a curve, e, in front to form the corner of the seat, and a gain, f, is cut on thel back of the same to come down over the front of the leg,

where it is secured by a bolt, z', passing through the leg, which,'in connection with the brace D, prevents end shake on the desk. I is the seat, provided with arms or battens J J ou the under side, H,and are provided at their inner ends with tenons h, which work into mortises in the part E of the back, to prevent any upward strain on the hinge. The seat I is hinged to said part E by hinges having their back flaps ym straight, and secured to the front side of said piece E', and the front flaps n secured to the back edge of the seat, and then bent forward and secured to the bottom of the seat also, so as to hide all ofthe hinge except the upper edge of thejoiut between the seat and back.

.The top piece of the back E and the top O are joined together by means of a tongue and groove, as seen at y, to give the desk further strength.

'Bumpers k of elastic material are placed in the battens J, so that when the seat is let down in place the said bumpers come in contact with the brackets H, near the outer end thereof, which prevents all noise and furnishes a spring for the seat. y

Having thus f ully described our invention,

what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

' The combination of the crossed legs A A and the brace D, constructed and arranged as and for the purposes herein set forth.

2. The grooved bracket H, attached to the front leg' A by means of bent bolt I) and nuts d d, as shown and described.

3. The bottom piece E of the back, constructed, as described, with the curve e and gains f f, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.

4. The combination of the hinged seat I with battens J J, having tenons h It, the brackets H H, and the lower back piece E', provided with mortises x x, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
