IMPROVEMENT IN SCHOOL-DESKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [91,846, dated June 12, 1877 application led March 23, 1877.
To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY H. ELBEEG, of Greenield, in the county Hancock and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in School-Desks 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a folding school-desk, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, Fig. 2 is a central vertical section, and Figs. 3 and 4 are detail views, of my invention.
The standards or end pieces of my desk are each composed of a front leg, A, and a rear leg, B, of suitable shape. The upper ends of these legs are connected by means of C, extending from the top downward for a suitable distance, and the parts fastened together by dowelpins d d, and glued, so that the three parts will form a solid and firm end piece for the desk.
E is the back of the desk, fastened in any suitable manner to the f'ront legs A A, and having its lower end curved forward, so as to coincide with the seatD when the same is let down for use. This seat is connected to the frame of the desk by means of hinges. each hinge consisting of two straps, G and G. The strap G runs transversely of, and is fastened to, the under side of the seat D, while the strap G is bent so as to be fastened in a notch in the lower curved edge of the back E, and the extreme end of said strap fastened by a bolt to the front leg A, thus making a firm and durable connection.
The inner end of the strap G of each hinge, at the joint with the strap G', is bent across and fastened to the inner edge of the seat D.
From this strap G projects a bracket, H, which, when the seat is let down for use, forms a support for the seat by coming in contact with and bearing against the front leg A. At the point on the leg where the bracket `H then rests is inserted a rubber cushion, a, and on the end of the bracket is formed a pin or tenon, b, which enters the center of said cushion, as shown.
The cushion a may be of leather or other suitable material, as well as of rubber, and it prevents all noise in letting down the seat.
J represents the desk-top, provided at its inner edge, on the under side, with a cleat, I, which is securely fastened to the inner ends of the arms I supporting the top J, and said arms are, at their inner ends, pivoted to the inner sid es of the rear legs B at the top, as shown in Fig. 2. 0n the rear side of the back E are hinged two arms, L L, which, when moved forw ard, forni a lirm support for the desk-top J.
It will be noticed that when the desk-top is let down the cleat I is above the upper ends of the arms L, and the act of raising the top throws the arms slightly forward by means of said cleat, so that they can be easily taken hold of to be moved entirely forward. K is a book case or box formed on the back of the desk, as shown.
I am aware that it is not new to construct a school-desk with a folding seat secured to the back by a strap-hinge, and provided with a bracket, upon which the seat rests when unfolded, said bracket being secured to the legs or standards of the desk. I am also aware v that a desk has been constructed having hinged top supported by horizontally-pivoted arms, the ends of which, when the top is folded, are held by angle-plates upon the under surface of the hinged top, and I do not claim such as my invention; but,
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The legs A B, back E, and seat D, in combination with the strap-hinges G G and the brackets H, the brackets being secured to the bottom of the seat, and provided with tenons b, and the legs A provided with cushions a, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with the back and end PATENT GEEIGE..
pieces of a school-desk, of the desk-top J, with cleat I, and the hinged supporting-arms L L, arranged to swing inward laterally out ofthe way, allowing the top J to swing downward, constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature inpresence of two witnesses.
HENRY H. ELBREG.
