Description

G. GARDNER.
Rocking-Chairs.
No. 133,431. Patented Nov.26,1872.
tion I will proceed to describe it.
GEORGE GARDNER, OF GLENGARDNER, NEW JERSEY.
lMPROVEMENT IN RQCKING-CHAIRS.
S ecification forming part of Letters Patent No. 233,431, dated November 26, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE GARDNER, residing in Glen Gardner, in the county of Hunterdon and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain Improvement in Rocking-Chairs, of which the following is a specification:
In the annexed drawing is illustrated a perspective view of my improved rockingchair.
This invention relates to an improvement in rocking-chairs; and it consists oftwo or more braces secured, 'IJ'idGliOGi, centrally to the hind legs, while its ends are extended, so as to form a connection with the rockers on one side, and the forward legs on the other side, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth.
To enable others to make and use my inven- In the accompanying drawing, A A refer to the front, and A A to the rear, legs of the chair. B is the frame of the seat, which is mounted upon and secured in any known way, to the said front legs, and recessed so as to abut against the inner and front sides of the rear legs, to which it is also fastened. O C are the rockers into which the legs are socketed. D D refer to braces which are used in bracing the rockers, and the rear and the front legs entering the said rockers.
The upper end 'of each of these braces is made to abut against the upper end of each of the front legs, and there suitably fastened. Each of these braces is again fastened to each of the rear legs by a lock-joint, or half-andhalved together, and then to the rockers in any suitable manner.
By this means of bracing theparts of the chair, not only is a substantial chair furnished, but one possessing beauty and elegance of appearance.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The braces D D abutting against the front legs A A, and forming a conjunction with the hind legs A A, and thence secured to the rockers G O, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
Intestimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name this 26th day of October, A. D. 1872, in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEO. GARDNER.
Witnesses: F. B. TRUMBOWER, D. O. YOUNG.
