This invention has reference to napkinholders and the like, and it is intended to pro vide means for more securely attaching the napkin to the clothes of the wearer without injury thereof, to facilitate the manipulation of the napkin in the suspended position and to obtain other objects and advantages that will appear as the specification proceeds. In accordance with the napkin holders heretofore in use the napkin was springactingly retained in engagement with a hook by a leafspring or the like which could be swung on a pivot against the hook, while a staple or stirrup connected to the clamping hook served for the purpose of suspending the device from the garment of the user. It has also been proposed to construct such holders substantially on the principle of the usual cl0th-pegs or clasps, so as to comprise two two-armed levers which were forced against each other by a coiled spring, and which at one of their ends retained the napkin between them, while at the other end of one of the legs a suspension loop, staple or the like was pivotally secured by means of which the device with the napkin was suspended from the garment.

In accordance with my invention a much more simple and more efficient construction of such pivotally connected clamping members for the purpose mentioned is obtained by providing one of these members, somewhat similar to the construction of clamping buckles, with an angularly disposed bent or arched section one edge of which is adapted to become engaged with a plate or a shield con nected to the other member and to thereby securely retain the inserted napkin in position.

In a preferred construction the two holding members are so arranged and constructed at their free ends that these ends which are not linked to each other are adapted to become spring-actingly overlapped in the closing or operating and clamping position, so as to constitute together the hook, loop, or staple for the suspension or insertion of the device upon the garment. By this means therefore there is no necessity of using a separate suspension hook or the like, and the pleasing appearance of this implement is increased, and there is the additional advantage that the un- HOLDER 316,964, and in Germany November 11, 1927.

intentional disengagement of the two sections of the device, while in its suspended operating position, will be sure to be avoided. The curved portion of one of the holder sections which according to the invention serves for the clamping in position of the napkin may be serrated, in order to increase the clamping action.

The invention will be more fully described with reference to the accompanying drawing showing by way of exemplification an embodiment of the principles of the invention on an enlarged scale, Figure l showing the holder in side elevation and in the operative position, and Figure 2 being a representation of the holder in side view and in the open position, while Figure 8 is a front view, and Figure l a rear-side view thereof.

Broadly considered, the holder comprises two parts a and b the upper curved or arched portions of which are spring-actingly overlapped, and which combined constitute the suspension staple, stirrup or hook of the holder.. The part a is rockably connected to the other part b by being linked to the support a mounted at the rear-side ofthe plate or shield at which latter is connected to the part b. The said part a is provided at its extremity with a curved or angularly disposed portion 9 which may be serrated, and which in the closing position of the parts a, 7) will rest with its edge against the part cl, so as to clampingly retain the inserted napkin f on the shield d. Obviously the serration of the bent or angular section 9 of the part a may be dispensed with, inasmuch as the forcible engagement of the bent part 9 with the plate or shield 03 will generally be sufficient for the retaining of the napkin.

The plate or shield (Z may be of any size or configuration, and it may likewise serve for pictorial or other informatory or advertising or similar representations. The upper curved extremities of the sections a and I) may either be dull, rounded or pointed, in order to adapt the holder for suspension or insert-ion with regard to the garment of the user. Instead of forming the two parts a, b or one of them, the part a for instance, so as to serve as a suspension hook or staple or as an inserting pin, I may also provide a special, separate suspension hook or staple or a separate suspensionpin in connection with the holder, as for instance in connection with the shield d. The entire implement or parts thereof maybe formed of metal, celluloid or any other suitable kind of material, and it may obviously be ornamented with jewels, semi-jewels, fakejewelry or in any other 10 suitable or pleasing manner, or with advertising matter.

It should be understood that the invention is not restricted to the particular ebmodiment herein shown by way of illustration,

but it is susceptible of various modifications and changes, to suit the convenience of the useigand within the scope and spirit of the invention, as defined by the appended claims.
