UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY S. WING, OF SOHENEGTAD Y, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN CARPET-STRETCHERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 173,097, dated February 1, 1876; application filed December 16, 1875..
To all whom it'may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY. S. WING, of Schenectady, in the county of Schenectady and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carpet- Stretchers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXactdescrip-' tion of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to carpet-stretchers; and consists of a carpet-stretcher composed of a slotted frame or body, with ratchet-teethon each side, a double operating-lever, engaging alternately in the teeth of the rack, and a carpet-holder with hooked teeth, all constructed, arranged, and adapted to operate as and for the purposes described.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view, and Fig. 2 a side elevation, of my invention complete.
A is a frame or the body of the device, with a slot, A, at its central portion, and a pin or spike, B, at its outer end, by which the device is secured to the floor. On each side of this slotted piece A are secured racks O O. D is a piece of any desired or appropriate length, secured at its central portion to the'body A by a center pin or bolt, E, and piece F, rnnningfin slot A. On the under side of this cross-bar D are a number of hooks, d, bent forward, for griping and holding the carpet. G is the operating hand-lever, secured to piece F by a center pin or bolt, H, the parts D F G being thus secured and working together, but allowed independent lateral oscillation. On under edge of lever G are two teeth or engaging edges, 9, which operate in the racks O.
The operation of the parts is as follows: The body A is secured in the desired position justment of this bar-caused by the catching of the carpet-is allowed for, and the parts of the instrument may be folded together in a compact space for transportation, 8m.
Thus it will 'be seen a simple, cheap, and effective carpet-stretcher is secured, and one not liable to be readily injured or to injure the carpet by tearing, &c.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a carpet-stretcher, the single bodypiece A, with central longitudinal slot A and exterior lateral racks G 0, its front end being provided with the spike B, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. In a carpet-stretcher, the combination, with the double rack-bar and holder, of adouble-actingratchet-faced lever, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In combination with the slotted bar-A A,'with racks (J O, the piece or tongue F, sliding in slot A, and hand-lever G, with engagin g faces 9 g, as and for the purposes described. i
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 13th day of December, 1875.
HENRY S. WING.
