My invention relates generally to a case and more specifically to a case which is adapted to receive and to enclose rolls of adhesive tape or the like. The primary object of my invention resides in the provision of'a novel case which is adapted to receive rolls of adhesive tape or the like and to protect the same from the effects of climate and from dust and dirt;
Another object is to provide such a case which provides trunnions upon which the roll may turn when the tape is being unwound.
Another object is to provide such a case which may be readily opened for the unwind- 1 ing and removal of the tape for use.
A further object, is to provide such a case which has a sharpened edge for cutting ofl tape which has been unwound.
A further object is to provide a case having such a cutting edge which is concealed when the case is closed and which is brought into operative position by the opening of the case.
Another object is to provide a case into which a roll of tape may be readily inserted.
Other objects and advantages will become apparent from the following description and from the accompanying drawings in wh1ch:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a case embodying my invention showing the case open and containing a roll of adhesive tape.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central sectional view of the case and roll of tape shown in Fig. 1.

While the invention is s'usce tible of various modifications and alternative constructions, I have shown in the drawings and will herein describe in detail the preferred embodiment, but it is to be understood that I do not thereby intend to limit the invention to 50 the specific form disclosed, but intend to cover all modifications and alternative constructions falling within the spirit and scope of the invention as expressed in the appended claims.
In its preferred embodiment the invention contemplates a case which is tubular in form and is adapted to receive a roll 5 of adhesive tape or the like and to support the roll for turning while the material thereon is unwound. The embodiment herein illustrated comprises generally two opposed concentric tubular sections 6 and 7 each having a wall 8 closing one of its ends, thereby forming two cup shaped members. The two sections are arranged so that the open end of the section 6 may be inserted into the'open end of the section 7 thus forming a closed case. To provide access to the tape from without the case so that it may be unwound and removed therefrom, an aperture 9 is formed in the side walls of each of the sections. The apertures 9 are. positioned so as to be in registry when the two sections are in one position thereby giving ready access to the tape which is supported therein and so that they be moved out of registry so as to close the case by relative rotation of the two cylinders.
Means .for supporting the roll within the case is provided and is herein illustrated as comprising a pair of trunnions 10, one formed integrally with each of the end walls 8 and provide longitudinally alined mountings for the ends of the rolls placed therein. Each 0 the trunnions is preferably provided with a shoulder 1 which abuts the end of the roll 5 and serves to definitely position the roll in alinement with the apertures 9.
In order to provide for the most satisfactory operation of the case I prefer to provide means normally adapted to prevent rela tive longitudinal movement of the two sections of the case. This means is herein shown as comprising an annular groove 12 formed in the inner surface of the outer section 7 near the open end thereof, and a boss 13 projecting outwardly from the inner section 6 so as to project into the groove 12 when the two sections are in assembled relation. In order that the boss 13 may be moved into. and out of the groove 12 when it is desired to separate the two sections for the purpose of inserting a new roll of tape, a longitudinally extending groove 14 is provided in the section 7 extending from the groove 12 to the edge of the tubular section, thus providing for the passage of the boss 13 when the two sections are separated.
Means is provided on the case for cutting or tearing off the material in the desired lengths as it is removed 'from the roll 5. This means as herein illustrated comprises a sharpened or toothed'edge 15 formed on one side of the aperture 9 in the inner section 6. The sharp edge is preferably placed on the inner section 6 so that it is not exposed when the case is closed. In order that the cutting edge 15 may be properly positioned whenever the case is opened a pair of stops 17 and 18 may be positioned in the groove 12 of the outer section 7 and in the path of the boss 13 on the inner section 6, these stops serving to limit the relative rotational movement of the two sections. The stop 17 is preferably positioned to prevent further rotation after the inner section 6 has been turned in acounterclockwise direction (Fig. 4) for a sufficient distance to bring the two apertures 9 out of registry and thereby close the case. The stop 18 is placed in the groove 12 in such a position that in opening the case the boss 13 will pass the groove 14 and be stopped with the apertures 9 in registry and the cutting edge 15 exposed.
It will be apparent that the invention provides a convenient protective case for rolled adhesive tape or the like into which the tape may be easily andquickly inserted and mounted upon rotatable supporting members so as to be readily unwoundfor use. It will also be apparent that the case is arranged so that it may be readily opened for the unwinding and removal of tape therefrom and that the provision of a cutting edge which is moved to its operative position by the opening of the case greatly facilitates the removal of the unwound tape.
I claim as my invention:
1. A protective case adapted to receive and rotatably support a roll of strip material, said case comprising a pair of opposed concentric cup shaped sections, said sect-ions being relatively rotatable so that side wall apertures therein may be brought into registry to permit of removal of material through the side wall of the case, a pair of opposed trunnions, one on each of said sections, adapted to provide a mounting for a roll of material, each of said trunnions having a shoulder formed thereon to engage the end of such roll to position said roll longitudinally of the case, a sharpened edge formed on the side of the aperture in the inner section, stop means effective in the relative rotation of the sections in opening the case to register the openings with said sharpened edge exposed for cutting 01f strip material which is unwound from the roll, and means normally operative to retain the two sections in assembled relation.
2. A'case for protecting rolled strip material, said case comprising walls for surrounding a roll, oneof said walls having an aperture therethrough for unwinding and removal of the material, means movable along the inner side of said wall for closing said aperture, and a sharpened edge on said means adapted to be positioned adjacent said aperture for cutting the strip material into desired lengths as it is unwound and removed from said case, said edgebeing covered when said aperture is closed.
3. A protective case adapted to receive and rotatably support a roll of strip material, said case comprising two opposed concentric cup-shaped sections relatively rotatable with respect to each other to open or close a side wall aperture therein, means normally operable to retain said sections in assembled relation, and means rendering the last said means ineffective in one position to allow disassembly of said sections for insertion of a roll into the case.
4. A protective case adapted to receive and rotatably support a roll of strip material, said-case comprising a pair of opposed concentric cup-shaped sections each having a side wall aperture formed therein, said sections being relatively rotatable so that the said apertures may be moved out of registry to close the case or brought into registry to permit of removal of material through the side wall of the case, and stop means effective in the relative rotation of the sections to prevent unnecessary movement thereof in opening and closing the case.
5. A protective case adapted to receive and support a roll of strip material, said case comprising a pair of opposed concentric cupshaped sections having side wall apertures therein,said sections being relatively rotatable to permit said apertures to be moved into or out of registry to open or close the case, a sharpened edge on the side of the aperture in the inner section, and stop'means effective in the relative rotation of said sections to properly position said sharpened edge when the case is open.
6. A protective case adapted to receive and rotatably support a roll of strip material, said case comprising two opposed concentric cup-shaped members having side wall apertures therein, said members being relatively rotatable so that said apertures may be moved out of registry to close the case or brought into registry to permit access to the interior of the case, stop means effective in the relative rotation of said members to prevent or;- cessive movement, and means normally operable to retain said members in assembled relation and arramznd to permit disassembly of said case for insertion of a roll of material.
7. A protective case for rolled strip material, said case comprising, in combination, a cup shaped member having a side wall aperture through which material may be unwound from a roll and removed from the case, an end member associated with said first member for closing the open end thereof and removable therefrom to permit insertion of a roll into said case, means normally operable to maintain said end member in its closing position, said members being relatively movable while said end member is maintained in its closing position by said means, and a closure carried'by said end member operable in such relative movement of the members to open or close said aperture.
