No. 455,749 1 Claim. (Cl. 22523) This invention relates to dispensing containers and more particularly to a dispensing container for dispensing tracing paper, wrapping paper, waxed paper, plastics, metal foil and other sheet material.
A disadvantage arises in the presently known dispensers, in that once the end portion is torn from the remainder of the roll, it is difficult to manipulate the remainder portion so that the end thereof may be grasped and with-drawn from the housing to be torn from the roll in a subsequent dispensing operation.
An object of the present invention therefore is to provide a new and improved means for tearing the end portion of a rolled-sheet material which permits the end portion of the remaining rolled sheet to be grasped readily for a subsequent dispensing operation.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a dispenser of this type that is quicker and more accurate in action than the known dispensers, and that can provide either a smooth cut or a serrated cut as desired.
Another object of the invention is to provide a dispenser container of this type that protects the paper or plastic from becoming soiled or damaged.
Yet another object of the invention is to provide a dispenser wherein the friction is reduced to a minimum.
Still another object is to provide means for positioning the end portion of the paper available for ready grasping by the operator.
It is also proposed to provide a dispenser of this type that is safe and harmless in operation and is sanitary.
Another object of the invention is to provide a dispenser of this type which will automatically close off the remaining edge of the paper and leave it concealed from view and in a protected position.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings and to the appended claim in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawings forming a material part of this disclosure:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective View of a dispensing container embodying one form of the invention, a strip of paper being shown partly severed.
FIG. 2 is a cross-sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of FIG. 1.
FIG. 2a is a view similar to FIG. 2 but showing the dispenser in closed inoperative position.
FIG. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 33 of FIG. 1.
Referring now in detail to the various views of the drawings, in FIG. 1 a dispensing container made in accordance with one form of the invention is shown and designated generally at 10. The container is preferably formed of cardboard but may be made of plastic or other suitable material. The container has an elongated cylindrical body including a tubular housing 12 open at both ends. A roll of waxed paper 14 is fitted in the housing. The roll consists of a tubular core 16 of cardboard with waxed paper 18 rolled therearound. The core extends the length of the housing and rolls on bearings 19 but the width of the paper is slightly less than the length thereof. A slot 20 extends from one end of the housing to the other. Cup-shaped removable metal ends 22 close the open ends of the housing 12.
In accordance with the present invention, a cutting device 24 is sleeved around the housing 12. The cutting device has a tubular body 26 with a slot 28 extending from end to end thereof and intersecting said ends. One edge,
the bottom edge as viewed in FIG. 1, constitutes a smooth knife edge 30 and the opposite edge constitutes a serrated or toothed knife edge '32.
In use, the free end 36 of the roll of waxed paper 18 is positioned so that it can be ejected through the slot 20 in the housing 12 and through the aligned slot 28 in the cutting device 24. By simply turning the cutting device 24 the slots may be brought into alignment, and/or by simply twisting or turning one of the end closures 22 in the proper direction, the free end portion 36 of the paper is ejected through the aligned slot a sufficient distance to permit the fingers of the operator to grasp the ejected free end portion and manually pull the paper outwardly the desired distance. Then the cutting device 24 is twisted or turned to cover up slot 20 (FIG. 2a) and in this position the cutting edge 30 or 32 presses the paper onto the housing 12, securely holding it down in a position ready to be cut. Then by simply twisting the paper back and pulling it over the cutting edge 30 or 32 from end to end of the cutting device 24, the paper will be severed from the roll. During this operation a new or fresh remaining end portion of the paper is automatically left concealed from view and protected and is held in place between outer housing 26 and inner housing 12, ready for use again and by merely twisting one of the end closures 22, this new and fresh end portion of the paper will pop outwardly to a position easily grasped by the fingers of the operator.
By merely manually turning the cutting device 24, in the direction of the arrow in FIG. 2a the slot 20 in the housing 12 is adapted to be closed concealing the paper from view and protecting the paper from outside influences.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and that various changes and modifications may be made within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
What is claimed is: A dispensing container for roll wax paper comprising an elongated hollow cylindrical housing open at both ends, cup-shaped closures for said ends, with each closure having therein means to support a roll of paper, said housing having an elongated slot extending from end to end thereof, an elongated hollow cylindrical cutting device sleeved over the housing, said cutting device having an elongated slot adapted to register with the slot in the housing, the edge of said latter slot being serrated serving as knife edges for tearing off paper projecting from the roll of paper in the housing and extending through the slots when the slots are aligned, said elongated hollow 5 cylindrical cutting device rotatable as a sleeve to close the slot in the housing.
