Description

DISPENSING CARTON FOR SHEET PAPER Filed Jan. '7, 1964 INVENTOR. 64?) Z #AWK United States Patent Office 3,lh,323 Patented Dec. l, 1964 ns., assignor to Hulk This invention relates to new and useful improvements in paper dispensing cartons, and more particularly to a carton for containing sheet paper in roll form wherein the paper may be torn as it is dispensed from the carton by pulling the same across a folded portion of the carton.
It has become the custom to package gift wrapping paper in roll form in cardboard cartons of various types and the roll and carton are sold together and when the paper is consumed the carton is destroyed. it is, therefore, important that a simple, efficient and inexpensive carton be employed in such practice. The present invention is designed to obtain such a result.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a dispensing carton for sheet paper in roll form wherein a minimum amount of cardboard is re uired to form the carton and to dispense the same therefrom and tear off a portion by pull across a folded portion of the carton, thus eliminating serrated lmife edges.
Other objects of the present invention are to provide a carton cut from a single blank of paper providing a bottom, sides and folded in flaps for engaging the side of the paper roll; to provide ends for the carton having slit portions therein forming tabs or trunnions extending inwardly over the side flaps to engage within a core upon which the sheet paper is rolled to retain the roll in the carton; and to provide a protective covering for the roll of paper and carton when the roll is mounted within the carton.
Further objects of the present invention are to provide a carton from cardboard having a relatively stiff or hard surface on one side which provides the outer surface of the carton; to provide the inner surface of the cardboard carton with spaced score lines, upon which lines the blank is folded to form the carton and transverse score lines for the end members; and to provide the end members with transversely extending ears or tabs which when the end members are folded upwardly on the transverse score lines the tabs or cars will lie flat against the sides of the carton underneath the side flaps.
Still further objects of the present invention are to provide cuts in the outer surface of the blank oppositely of the score lines through the hard surface of the blank but not entirely through the cardboard to form a cutting edge for the paper along one side of the carton and a bottom edge thereof; and to provide a device of this character simple and economical to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will become apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings Wherein are set forth by way of illustration and example certain embodiments of this invention.
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the carton with the roll of paper therein and a protective covering therefor and illustrating an opening in the bottom for the middle finger of the hand to roll the paper to aid in dispensing the same therefrom.
FIG. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view through the carton and paper.
FIG. 3 is a transverse cross-sectional view taken on a line 33, PEG. 2.
FIG. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary view particularly illustrating the paper being torn from the bottom edge of the carton.
FIG. 5 is an enlarged fragmentary view showing the sheet paper being torn along a side edge of the carton.
Referring more in detail to the drawings:
1 designates a dispensing carton embodying the features of my invention made from a blank of cardboard paper or the like and comprising, a bottom 2, sides 3 and 4, ends 5 and ti, and side flap extensions '7 and 8. The end members 5 and d are provided with upwardly extended portions 9 and Ill, rounded as indicated at 11 to conform to the round roll of paper. The ends are provided with semi-circular slits 12 (FIG. 1) forming tabs 13 and 1d hinged as indicated at 15 to form trunnions extending into the core 16 of a roll of paper 17. The core is made from a relatively stiff cardboard paper or other similar material to form a relatively stiff support for the sheet paper.
The blank is provided with longitudinal score lines 18, i 24 and 21 upon which the blank is folded to form the bottom, sides, and side extension flaps 7 and 3. The other surface of the cardboard blank is out along the score lines through the relatively hard surface thereof as indicated at 22, 23, 24 and 25 forming a cutting edge 26 on one side of the carton adjacent the paper roll and another cutting edge 27 on one lower side edge of the carton as hereinafter described. The cut is only partially through the cardboard and the edges formed by the cut separate when the cardboard is folded and the cuts are exteriorly of the folded carton so as to present sharp edges facing outwardly at the respective bottom corners of the carton and at the upper open side edges of the carton with those edges extending longitudinally of the carton serving as severing edges over which the paper may be pulled and severed as later described.
The ends 5 and 6 are provided with outwardly extending ears or tabs 23 and 2?. The blank is provided on its inner face with transverse score lines as indicated at 39 and 31 (FIG. 2). The ends are provided with longitudinal score lines (not shown) but which are in alignment with the score lines 22 and 23. Vfhen the ends are folded upwardly the side tabs 28 and 29 will extend into the carton and lie flat against the inside of the sides 3 and 4. The extension side flaps are folded inwardly and downwardly and the upper edges of the tabs 2% and 29 engage against the inside surface of the flaps near the top thereof as shown in FIG. 3 and will exert a pressure thereagainst to press the flaps against the roll of paper to prevent free rotation of the paper when the roll is not in use.
When the blank is folded as herein described the roll of paper with its core is pressed downwardly into the open trough 32 until it rests against the flaps 7 and 8 and the ends 33 and 34- of the core H extending outwardly slightly from the end of the sheet paper as illus trated in FIG. 2 will press against tabs 13 and 14 until the edge of the core passes the tabs so that the tabs will engage in the open end of the core to hold the core in the carton and thus forming trunnions upon which the core with the paper thereon will rotate. The tabs 13 and 14- are relatively stiff due to the relatively stiff material of the cardboard blank and the hinged portion 15 thereof.
During display and when the paper is not being dispensed from the carton a protective covering 35 is provided of thin transparent material.
When it is desired to dispense the paper in partial form from the carton the cover 35 is removed and by placing the third finger of one hand in the opening 36 in the bottom 2 of the carton the roll of paper may be rotated and the free edge 37 grasped by the other hand of the user to pull or remove as wide a sheet as desired. At that point the carton and roll may be held in rigid cardboard paper dueto the surface thereof. a
' formed by a semi circular slit in'said ends. t
or from rolls 7 3 position by one hand and by the user grasping the free edge 37 vwith the other hand and pulling downwardly and angles to said bottom forming bottom corners and the flaps extending inwardly and downwardly, the bottom rearwardly towards the user the sheet will be out along the sharp edge l o formed by the 'sharpicorner of the cut 24in the longitudinal Thecutting edge 27 maybe utilizedby pulling the sheet from the roll and Wrapping it around the side 4 and underneath the bottom 2 as illustrated in FIG. 4
and by grasping the edge 37 and holding it firmly against the bottom and placing the bottom of the carton with the sheet paper underneath on a support, such as a'table, I and upward pnllalong the edge of the paperwill cause 7 the paper to be tornas indicated at 3% (FIG. 4).
l will be obvious from: the foregoing that Ihave pro vided an improved dispensing carton for sheet paper in roll form'of extremely simple parts and with a minimum 2 The cuts 22,23, 24 and '25 stop short of the end of the carton as indicated at 39 (FIG. 4)'so that the ends and side walls of the carton will not be weakened at the of said blank having portions extending outwardly of said bottom and said portions having transverse score lines i atzthe juncture of said bottomso that when said portions are turned upwardly they form ends for said oarton, said ends having tabs formed by semi-circular slits at substantially the center thereof so that when the tabs are pushed inwardly they form trunnions, a hollow core, sheet paper on said core forming a'roll said roll being adapted V to engage in said carton with its sides resting on the inj I Wardly and downwardly extending flaps and said tabs on V said ends engaging in the ends of the hollow core, the
