Description

Sept. 24, 1929. FITCH 1,729,264
EMAS CULATOME Filed Sept. 11, 1928 Patented Sept. 24, 1929 PATENT OFFICE EMERT L. FITCH, F AUDUBON, IOWA EMASCULATOME Application filed September 11, 1928.
This invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in veterinary implements and relates particularly to emasculatomes. It has for its primary object certain improvements in the handle portions of the type of emasculatome which is'known in the art as "Burdizzo pincers.
To those skilled in this art, it is well known that while this type of emasculatome is very e'liicient in ope-ration, it is exceedingly awkward to manipulate in view of the straight handles with which it is provided and in the preferred and accepted manner of operating the pincers above mentioned, it is necessary, if the animal is standing, for the operator to kneel, to place one handle on his knee, and for an assistant to help him to close the instrument in order to bring the jaws together.
With a knowledge of these conditions and with a view of overcoming the defects above mentioned, my invention has for its primary object an improved instrument of this type, in which the handles are so formed that the operator can stand upright when performing the operation and without the necessity of an assistant, the handles being so formed that the operation of closing the jaws may be performed with one hand, while the other hand is properly holding and pressing the scrotum at the proper point.
l/Vith this and other objects in view, will more fully appear as the description proceeds, my invention consists in certain constructions and arrangements of the parts that I shall fully hereinafter describe and claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which: I
Figure 1 is a side elevation of an instrument constructed in accordance with my invention; and t Figure 2 is a rear elevation thereof.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in all of the views of the drawing by like reference characters.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral designates the jaws of the instrument provided with the usual laterally extended edges lland pivotally connected together, as at 12.
In the rear of the pivot 12, the jaw members Serial No. 305,217.
The handle members and 16 are not u only pivotally connected at one end, as at 13, 14, to the rear ends of the jaw members 10, but are also pivotally connected one .to the other near such ends, as at 17, whereby, a's'is manifest, when the handle members are brought together, the aws will be'closed and when the handle members are spread apart, the jaws will be opened by the pivoted rear ends of the aw members being. brought together in an obvious manner. v
So much of the description as haspreceded relates to a construction which is not new with me but which constitutes the main part of the pincers hereinbefore referred to. My invention resides in the particular con struction and formation of the handle members whereby, as hereinbefore stated the operator does not have to rest one handle upon his knee but can stand upright and perform the entire operation without an assistant and I shall now describe this specific construction and formation of the handle members whereby this result is attained.
The handle mmeber 15, close to the pivot point 17, is bent sharply to form an intermediate lateral extension lying in the same plane as the aw members 1O,and said handle member 15 is then reversely bent at a lesser angle to form an end extension 19 lying in the sameplane as the intermediate extension 18 and jaw members. I
The other handle member 16) is also correspondingly bent in the same direction as the handle member 15 to form an intermediate lateral extension and an end extension 21, the latter beingpreferably bent at i i Cir parts, the handle member 16 will lie behind or alongside of the handle member 15, the two handle members thus overlapping for a considerable portion of their extent. It will thus be seen that the two intermediate extensions 18 and 20 of the respective handle members 15 and 16 can be easily grasped by one hand.
Preferably, a set-screw 23 is carried by the handle member 16 close to the pivotally connected end thereof and is designed to impinge against the adjacent portion of the handle member 15 to serve as a check in the closing movement of the tool. Preferably also, either one or both of the handle members at their relatively free ends are hollow for the reception of wooden or other extensions if desired.
From the foregoing description in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be seen that I have provided a very simple, durable and eiiicient veterinary implement which will accomplish the results first hereinbefore set out.
While the accompanying drawing illustrates what I believe to be the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be under stood that the invention is not limited thereto but that various changes may be made in the construction, arrangements and proportions of the parts without departing from the scope of the invention, as claimed.
I claim 1. An emasculator, comprising jaw members and handle members pivotally connected to the jaw members and to each other, each of said handle members being sharply deflected close to their pivotal connections in substantially the same plane as the aw members to form intermediate lateral extensions and being further bent reversely to form end extensions, one of said handle members being sharply deflected at right angles to its firstmentioned bend whereby it will move, in the closing operation of the tool, alongside of the other handle member.
2. An emasculator, comprising jaw members pivotally connected together and handle members pivotally connected to the jaw mem bers and to each other, each of said handle members being sharply bent close to their pivotal connections and in the same plane as the jaw members and one of said handle members, close to its pivotal connection, being sharply offset at right angles to its first-mentioned bend so that it will pass alongside of the corresponding bend of the other handle member in the closing movement of the tool.
3. An emasculator, comprising jaw members pivotally connected together and handle members pivotally connected to the jaw members and to each other, both of said handle members being bent sharply in the same direction and in thesame plane as the jaw members close to their pivotal connections to form intermediate extensions and thence bent reversely, one more than the other, to form end extensions, one-of said handle members being deflected sharply at right angles to its firstmention'ed bend and close to its pivotal connection, as and for the purpose set forth.
4;. An emasculator, comprising jaw members pivotally connected together, handle members pivotally connected to the jaw members and to each other, both of said handle members being provided with intermediate angular extensions lying in substantially the same plane as the jaw members and with reversely bent end extensions, one of which is bent more than the other, one of said handle members being sharply bent at right angles to the direction of its intermediate extension whereby one of the handle members will pass alongside of the other in the closed position of the parts and a set-screw carried by one of said handle members close to its pivot point and designed to impinge against the adjacent portion of the other handle member to serve asa check.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature.
