Description

I. H. 4222M.
Patented Sept. 17, 1929 UNITED STATES DAVID R. ALLEN, OF OMAHA, NEBRASKA MUSICJZEAF TURNER Application filed March 19, 1925, Serial No. 16,753. Renewed February 14, 1929.
This invention relates to music leaf turners, and has for one of its objects the provision of a novel, simple and inexpensive device of this character which shall be applicable to pianos, organs and music stands, which may be readily set in operation, and which when in operation will rapidly turn a leaf of music from the right to the left.
With the above and other objects in view,
the invention consists of the construction,
combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illus trated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in front elevation of a music leaf turner constructed in accordance with my invention,
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on the plane indicated by the line 22 of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the plane indicated by the line 33 of Figure 1, and
Figure 4: is a horizontal sectional view taken on the plane indicated by the line 44 of Figure 1.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description, and designated in the several views of the accompanying drawing, by similar reference characters.
The music leaf turner comprises a back rest 1 provided at its lower edge with a shelf 2 and intermediate its upper and lower edges with a shelf 3. An upright 4 is removably secured to the back rest 1 above the shelf 3 by bolts 5 having threaded engagement with the upright and back rest and a bracket 6 secured to the upright and embracing the upper edge of the back rest. The upper end of the upright 4 is provided with a forwardly extending flange 7 which has bearing openings 8 for the reception of the upper end portions of shafts 9. The lower end portions of the shafts 9 extend through slots 10 in the shelf 8, and are retained therein against the curved end walls thereof by a plate 11 provided at its rear edge with semi-circular notches 12 for the reception of the shafts and secured to the shelf by bolts or screws 13. The shafts 9 are supported by collars 14 secured thereto and resting upon the shelf 3. Arms 15 are secured to and extend horizontally from the upper ends of the shafts 9, and they are provided with clips 16 through the medium of which the sheets of music may be se cured thereto. Springs 17'surrounding the lower ends of the shafts 9 below the shelf 3 and secured to the shafts and back rest 1, are under tension when the arms 15 are at the right side of the device. Fingers 18 which are located between the shelves 2 and 3 and extend from the lower ends of the shafts 9 in the general direction of the arms 15, have forwardly offset terminal portions 18*. Horizontal latches 19 located between the shelves 2 and 3 and pivotally mounted upon a bolt 20 secured to the shelves, are provided at their front ends with hooks 21 which are adapted to contact with the outer side of the offset portions 18 of the fingers 18 and hold the arms 15 at the right against the tension of the springs 17. The latches 19 are yieldingly held in contact with the fingers 18 by springs 22, and to limit the movement of the fingers under the influence of the springs, stops 23 are secured to rear ends of the latches for contact with the back rest 1. Forwardly and rearwardly extending shafts 2 1 are journaled upon the shelf 2 to the right of the latches 19, and each is provided at its rear end with an upwardly extending arm 25 and at its front end with a laterally extending lever 26 terminally provided with a butt or finger piece 27. Links 28 are pivotally connected as at 29 to the latches 19 and as at 30 to the upper ends of the arms 25.
In practice the arms 15 are arranged at the right of the device and the sheets of music secured thereto by the clips 16. The sheets of music may be successively turned by successively depressing the levers 26. When the levers 26 are depressed, the latches are withdrawn from contact with the fingers 18 whereupon the springs 22 react and swing the shafts 9 and arms 15 to the right. The outer sides of the hooks 21 are curved to permit the fingers 18 to move rearwardly beyond them during the swinging of the arms 15 to the right, and as soon as the fingers pass the hooks the springs 22 will return the latches 19 to finger engaging position, whereby the arms will be prevented from returning to the left until the levers 26 are again depressed. As the upright 4 and shafts 9 may be removed from the back rest 1 after first withdrawing the screws 5 and plate 11, the device may be compactly folded for storage or shipment. WVhile the device shown is adapted to hold but two sheets of music, it is to be understood that it may be made to hold as many sheets as desired.
It should be understood that the drawing is merely illustrative and does not pretend to-give exact proportions. Furthermore, the said drawing is illustrative of a preferred construction, it being my expectation that arious changes and modifications may be made Without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
hat is claimed is A music'leaf turner comprising a support, an upwardly extending shaft journaled on the support, a music leaf engaging element carried by the upper end of the shaft, a bolt secured to the support at one side of and in parallel relation to the shaft, a finger extending from the lower end of the shaft in the direction of the bolt and having a forwardly offset terminal portion, a latch pivoted to and extending forwardly from the bolt and provided at its forward end with a hook contacting with the offset terminal portion of the finger, a spring carried by the bolt and engaging the latch to hold the hook of the latch in engagement with the finger, a stop secured to the rearward end of the la ch and extending therefrom in the direc tion of the shaft and contacting with the support to limit the movement of the latch by the spring, a second shaft journaled on the support at right angles to the bolt and terminally provided with arms, and a link connected to one of the arms and to the latch.
In testimony whereof I aliix my signature.
DAVID R. ALLEN.
