WALKER, of the city of Chicago, Cook county, State of Illinois, have invented a new and Auseful Innprovement in Handles for Traveling-Bags, of which the following is a lfull description, ret'- erence being had to the accompanying drawings, in whichy Figure 1- is an elevation, showing only a portion of a Satchel.V Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section -of the handle. Figs. 3 and 4 details.

Travelers frequently use a small chain and lock for the purpose of securing ltravelingbags, and other articles of a similar nature, to a car-seat or otherplace temporarily, passing the chain usually through the handle of the bag. This method is not satisfactory, because, when not -in use, the chain is liable to be misplaced or lost,` and as the handles of bags have been made they might be cut quite easily, so that the chain is but a slight protection.

jlhe objects of my invention are to provide a safety-handle, which cannot readily be cut, and to so construct the handle that it can be used for securing the articlewithout the use of a chain, which I do by providngthe center -of the handle with a wire or other piece of metal, which cannot be easily cut, and by removably connecting the handle, at one end,

In manufacturing it will be convenient to pass the end of the wire a through the eye u,

and then form the eye b', and the-plate e can be connected with the other end of a .inthe same manner. f

I do not limit myself to the use of any parv ticular form of lock.` y

In use,one end of the handle is permanently secured to the satchel as usual, and the other f end-is connected to the satchel bymeans of the plate 'e and the bolt of the lock mentioned, so that one end can be easily removed, permitting the handle to be passed around, or

over, the arm of a car or other seat, or other suitable fixed thing; and the satchel can then be secured thereto by means of the plate e and bolt of the lock.

The lock described is in addition to the lock usually used; but a single lock could be used, in which case it would be well` to use a springlock.

A handle, such as described, omitting the plate e, could 4be permanently secured to a satchel at both ends, and would be an improvement on those now in use, which are liable to give out if required to sustain considerable weight. y

The notch h in e is not a necessity.

What'I do claim las new, and desire 'to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows:

In combination with a handle for a traveling-bag, or other similar article, the plate e, adapted to b'e connected to the bag by means of the bolt ory catch of a lock, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
