Description

A. A HAZELTINE. YMOISTENING DEVICE FOR GRINDING-WHEELS. No.17 Z,7.35.
Patented Jan. 25,1876,

UNITED STATES PATENT Orrront ANDREW A. HAZELTINE, OF NEW BEDFORD, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN MOISTENING DEVICES FOR GRlNlNG-WHEELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 172,735., dated January 25, 1876 application filed December 18, 1675.
In all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW A. HAZEL TINE, of New Bedtord, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Moistening Device for Grinding-Wheels, of which the following is a specification:
The accompanying drawing represents a side elevation, partly in section, of my improved device for moistening the grindingwheels of dentists and other lathes.
The object of my invention is to provide for grinding-wheels of lathes, 8250., an improved moistening apparatus that supplies the required quantity of. water or other liquid to the grimling-surface, and is easily and instantly operated.
The invention consists of a spring-clamped sponge, which is applied to a movable standard, and supplied with moisture from an, adjustable fountain arranged above the sponge, said fountain having a spout and elastic cover to discharge, by slight pressure, a quantity of liquid on the sponge.
In the drawing, A represents a solid base, which is preferably made of cast-iron, of such size and Weight that it serves as asubstantial support for the parts placed thereon; also, if desired, as a small anvil to shape and form articles thereon. The base A carries an upright standard, B, to which are applied a socket, O, for sponge, holding-spring D, and supportingarm E oi' the fountain F, both spring-socket O and arm E being made adjustable to different height, and secured by suitable clampscrews. The spring-holder D takes hold of sponge by teeth or spurs at the ends, so as to keep sponge in position along wheel, and prevent its being pulled out. The shank of the springholder D may be quickly taken out from the socket, and inserted again for cleaning the sponge without removing the same from the spring. The fountain F is securely attached either in rigid or adjust-able manner to the supporting-arm E, as desired, and readily set into suitable position above the sponge.
A detachable spout, F, is screwed into a hole at the lower part of the fountain, the same being filled with Water or other lubricating fluid through the hole.
The. upper part of the fountain is closed by an elastic cover, E of india-rubber, or other elastic material attached in suitable manner, which serves for the purpose of discharging moisture through the spout by the slightest pressure on the cover.
The moistening device is placed in position at-the side of the wheel to be wetted, the sponge brought in contact therewith, and the moisture fed to the sponge, as required, by touching the cover from time to time, with the finger. The exact supply of moisture necessary for grinding, polishing, 850., may thus be easily regulated, and a too large amount of moisture avoided, without removing either hand from the work.
The device forms thus a convenient and readily operated moisture for grinding-wheels of all kinds, being easily cleaned and applied to the point where it is required.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- A device or apparatus for supplying moisture to grindstones of lathes, 8rd,, composed of. a solid standard, adjustable and springclamped sponge, and adjustable supply'tbuir tain with issuing spout, and elastic cover, the whole being arranged and applied substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
