WORK-SUPPORT FOR GRINDER-S.
es on.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 18, 1921..
Application filed August 23, 1919. Serial No. 319,503.
T 0 all to hom it may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL E. How, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rhinebeclr, in the county of Dutchess, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Voila-Supports for Grinders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to work supports for grinders for use with grind stones, emery wheels and other tool grinding devices, and is designed for the purpose of supporting or holding the tool to be ground at the proper angle to the wheel.
The object of the invention is to provide a device that shall be simple of construction, cheap and easy to attach to any of the usual forms of grinding stands.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device that may be adjusted to produce any angle desired on the tool to 'be ground, and which also may be adjusted to hold tools of different lengths.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain construction and combination of parts as will be fully described and claimed in the annexed speci fication, and shown in the drawings which form a part of this application, and in which like figures of reference refer to corresponding parts in all of the views, but it is fully understood that while I have described my invention as shown that I do not confine myself to the exact design as shown, as slight changes may be made in the construction and combination of the several parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to'the drawings.
' Figure 1 is a side elevation of a grind stone, showing the device attached thereto, and a tool in place for grinding.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, without the tool.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the support showing the method of holding the adjustable rest.
Fig. 4: is a detail view of a modified form showing a different method of holding the tool rest.
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the same.
Figs. 6 and 7 show still another form of tool rest.
Referring to the drawings, the usual form of grindstone is indicated by the numeral 1, and is mounted on the frame 2, in the usual manner. My invention comprises a support 3, having one end hingedly secured to the frame adjacent to the grindstone, by suitable means, such as the bolt 4.
Said support 3, is formed with a central slot 5, within which is placed a locking bolt 6, having av T head for engaging the under side of the support 3; said bolt passing upward through an adjustable rest block 7, mounted on the upper surface of the support 3, and designed to brace the end of the tool 8, to be ground; said rest being adjustable in relation to the sup-port for tools of difierent lengths, the rest block 7, being held by the thumb nut 8.
For adjusting the angle of the support in relation to the grindstone to produce the required bevel on the tool, there is provided a sector 9, secured to the underside of the support 3, and to the frame 2, by the bolt 10, and nut 11.
Referring to Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawings, the support 3, is provided with raised edges 12, having a series of teeth or notches 13, and the rest block 14, is provided on its lower surface with lugs 15, which engage the notches 13, and said restblock 14, is held in place by a bolt 16, passing through a flat spring 17, bearing against the lower surface of said support in such a manner that the rest block 1 1, may be raised out of engagement with the notches 13, and moved by the fingers without loosening the nut 18.
In the modified form shown in Figs. 6 and 7 of the drawings, the support 3, is provided with a. shaft 19, threaded for the greater part of its length and mounted in bearings 20, and 21, in the ends of said support 3, and provided with a handle 22.
The rest block 24, has a tongue 25, extending downward in the slot 26, and threaded on said shaft in such a manner that by the rotation of said shaft 19, the rest block 2 1, is moved up or down on the surface of the support.
The operation of the device will be readily seen from the drawings and description, and it may be applied not only to grindstones, but to any grinding or polishing wheel.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is V a The combination with a rotary grinder 5 and its supporting frame, of an adjustable work support formedwith a longitudinal slot and pivoted to the frame at its end remote from the grinder, a stop adjustably mounted in said slot, at depending slotted 10 sector at the end of the support adjacent the. grinder, and a clamping bolt in the frame and lying in the slot of the sector for clamping the support in adjusted position.
Intestimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
