FELT POLISHING STICK. APPLICATION FILED H.219, 191s.
Patented July 28, 1914 E STATES P rnn'r ronisriizte srrci'r Patent-ed arenas, ieia.
Application filed January 29, 1918. Serial No. 744,842.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnonen A. Rename, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Wollaston, 1n the county of Norfolk and State of'Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Felt Polishing-Sticks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to reinforced felt polishing sticks; and it has for its object the provision of a device of this character which will be designed particularly for use in polishing heading-dies or li e tools, and which is also constructed whereby it may be used by dentists for polishing the teeth and for removing discolorations or tartar therefrom and for polishing gold crowns and bridge work.
Another object of the invention is to provide a polishing stick which will include an elastic polishing element and a rigid holder therefor, the latter being associated with the former whereby a part thereof of minimum proportion may be exposed so as to permit of its being effectually a plied to the work.
A further object of t e invention is the provision of a polishing stick wherein the cleaning element thereof is formed of compressible material, such as felt, which may be compressed and fed spirally into the receiving bore of the holder in a convenient manner in the manufacture of the article.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrange ment of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings :-Figure 1 is a side view of the polishing stick; and Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section therethrough.
With a view to providing a polishing stick wherein the polishing element thereof will be reinforced throughout its length and so arranged that a very small portion thereof may be exposed for proper application to the work to be olished, I provide a holder 1, which is pre erably constructed of wood and provided with a longitudinal bore 2 which opens onto one end of the holder, as clearly shown. The exterior surface of the holder is provided with marked ortions such as the circles 3, which are equiistantly arranged relatively and which extend along the support through the len h of the bore 2 for a purpose to be hereina ter described.
The polishing material 4 comprises a sin 1e length of compressible material, such as ch, or the like which in the initial manufacture of the article may be compressed and gradually fed spirally into the receiving ore of the holder 1. The polishin material has a. length initially greater t an the depth of the receiving bore of the holder, so that the effective pollshing end of the material may be properly exposed for use. At the open end of the bore, the material of the holder 1 is sharpened or pointed, as at 5, so as to ermit the polishing material to be proper y exposed during the operation of polishing small objects. The external indi cating surfaces on the holder 1 are to designate the termination of the polishing material in the holder and to indicate proper points in the length of the holder that may be touched and sharpened, so as to expose the polishing end of the polishing material, as the latter becomes worn. In other words, the holder may be sharpened at the discretion of the operator as in the operation of sharpening a pencil to expose the lead.
It is obvious that the device may be made in any required length or diameter as may be necessary to adapt them to a particular use.
While the device is designed especially to be manipulated by the hand, it is also obviously intended that the same may be used in a suitable holding device such as a spring chuck or screw center in a polishinghead or lathe where it may be revolved and subjected directly to the work to be polished or applied as the latter is revolved in any well known manner.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawarea-ear ings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood Without requirinia more extended explanation.
Having t us described my mvention,
5 what I claim is In a device of the character described comprising an elongated stick provided with a tapered end, said stick being formed with a longitudinal cylindrical bore open- 10 ing out of its tapered end, and a fibrous strip of a slightly larger diameter than the diameter of said bore, said fibrous strip having its body spirally expanded within said bore and having a greater length than said bore. 15 In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
