GUARD FOR GAS-BURNER TAPS.
Application filed October 29, 1927.
This invention relates to devices for safeguarding gas burners so as to prevent the gas from being turned on by children accidentally or in playing.
The general object of the invention is to provide a shield or guard which is adapted to be engaged over the handle of the valve or over a number of handles and which will positively hold the handles from being turned into a position permitting the flow of gas until the gas guard has been removed.
Another object is to provide a construction of this character which may be readily applied and readily removed by a grown person but which cannot be removed by children.
Other objects will appear in the course of the following description.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, herein Figure 1 is a perspective view of a guard for gas burners constructed in accordance with my invention;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary top plan view thereof in applied position;
Figure 3 is a section on the line 8 3 of Figure 2;
Referring to this drawing, it will be seen that the safety gas guard is formed of a sheet of metal, designated 10. The upper and lower edges of this sheet are turned respectively downward and upward, as at 11 and 12. These edges are each formed wlth the rolled bead 13. Between the portions 11 and 12 the metal is longitudinally depressed, as at 14, and inasmuch as the metal is resilient this portion 14 constitutes a spring whlch may be expanded but will immediately act to retract the hook-like portions 11 and 12.
This device is intended to be used in connection with the gas jet valves of gas stoves. In gas stoves there is usually a longitudinally extending header pipe 15, from which pipes extend to the difierent burners, and
' passage through these different burners is controlled by valves. the stems of which are designated 16 and the handles of whlch are designated 17. WVhen these handles 17 are turned so as to extend parallel with the pipe.

stances the handles will be entirely guarded and cannot be turned until the device has been removed. In taking it off, the lower margin 12 is drawn downward and pulled outward until the guard may be pulled laterally away from the pipe 15 and then lifted up.
The guard may be very quickly put in place and as quickly removed. The guard may be made of sufiicient size so as to hold only one gas jet handle 17 or may be sufiiciently long so as to hold a plurality of these handles. The guard will save gas inasmuch as it prevents any of the jets being even slightly opened and will prevent children from playing with the valves and opening them and either igniting the gas or being asphyniated.
I claim 1. A guard for gas burner taps formed of a strip of resilient sheet metal, the middle portion of the strip being bent inward on a median line, the marginal portions of said strip on each side of said median line being approximately Ushaped in cross section, one of said U-shaped portions being smaller in crosss section than the other of said U-shaped portions and being disposed with the arms of the smaller U-shaped portion at right angles to the larger U-shaped portion, the larger U-shaped margin of the strip being adapted to engage around the gas pipe of a gas stove, the smaller of the U-shaped margins being adapted to engage over and embrace a series of taps coacting with the gas burner pipes when the handles of the taps are disposed in alinement.
2. A guard for gas burner taps formed of a strip of resilient sheet metal, the middle of the sheet being bent inward on a median line to provide two lateral portions, one of said lateral portions being approximately U- shaped in cross section and having its outermargin formed wit-h an inturned head, the other of said lateral portions being approximately U-shaped in cross section and having its outer margin formed with an inturned bead, the last named lateral portion being at an angle to the first named lateral portion and being less in width than the first named lateral portion, whereby one of said lateral portions may embrace a gas pipe and the other engage over and embrace a series of alined tap handles.
