- This invention,relates to. improvementsin gas burner -'-att'acl'1ments and has; particular reference to a: device? for automatically shut-ting o'ft the gas: supply should the burner become extinguished Another obje'ct of this invention 'isito-prod uce a de'Vicewh'ich is sim'ple'in construction and therefore cheap to manufacture;
Another object is to provide av device in which may be readily attached to any gas burner.
(other objects description.
Iii the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and wherein like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure I is a top plan view of a gas burner having my device attached thereto, Figure II is a vertical cross-section of the sliding latch,
'Figure III is a fragmentary view similar to Figure II, showing the latch in locked position, and
Figure IV is an end elevation of the latch box showing the latch in its twopositions,
Mlany people have been. asphyxiated through a gas burner becoming extinguished, It often occurs that a vessel will boil over and extinguish the gas, with the result that the room quickly fillswith gas and serious harm may result. It also fre quently happens that the gas supply may be shut off at an outside point and when again turned on the burner will permit the gas to escape.
I have therefore provided a device which is positioned adjacent the burner so that a portion of the flame contacts the device and as soon as the burner is lit the gas cock will remainin open position. However, immediately upon the extinguishment of the flame, my device will serve to close the cock 5 thus preventing any possibility of the escape of gas from the burner.
In the accompanying drawings wherein upon the under surface, of the stove as by and advantages will be apparent'during the course of the following screws 8 and 9. This latch preferably rectangular inshape, andis of sufficient length to contain therein a spring 1 1' and a latch '12. The spring. 11 has-o'ne-of its ends secured as at 13-to the latclrbox, whileits opposite end is slidably engaged as atl-et':
to the latch 12.
1 It will be noted that the latch -1 2'-has' a cross section which-is less thanthe' crosssec tion of the, interior of the box 7, the {purpose of which will behereinafterdescribed,
Secured to the bottom of the latch box: is an inclined strip 16. This strip is posi tio'ned on the bottom of' the latch box and toward the burner.v -Tliis inclined s t-rip extends into the latch box to a point adjacent an opening 17, through which opening the nose 18 of a heat controlled element 19 passes.
The nose 18 is adapted to engage a notch 21 formed in the latch 12 in a manner to be hereinafter described.
The heat controlled element is preferably a curved member having one end secured as at 22 to a bracket supported by arms 23 and 241. This construction leaves the end carrying the nose 18 free to move in accordance with the expansion or contraction of the heat controlled element. A cable 26 is adapted to be attached to the latch 12 and turn secured to the gas cock 29 which has the usual handle 31.
The result of this construction is that when the operator turns the handle 31 of the cock 29 so as to permit gas to flow to the burner 6, the cable 26 will pull upon the latch 12 against the action of the spring 11. The latch will then ride upon the inclined strip 16 and assume the position shown in Figure IV Assuming now that the operator ignites the gas issuing from the burner 6, the flame will contact the heat controlled element 19 which will immediately expand thus forcing the nose 18 into the notch 21 of the latch. The operator can then release the handle 31 and the cock will remain in an open position. After the burner has been lit a few moments the continued expansion of the heat controlled element will force the latch toward the right of Figure IV and to the position shown in Figure IV The purpose of this sidesliding action is that should the gas become extinguished and the heat controlled element commences to contract, it will move but a short distance before the ends 18 will become disengaged from the latch for the reason that the latch has dropped down back of the inclined strip 16 as indicated in Figure IV which will now permit the spring 11 to draw the latch to the position shown in Figure II, which will also draw upon the cable 26 and through this connection to the segment'28, will shut off the cock 29. g
It will thus be impossible for anygas to escape from the burner at any time when there is no flame. 1 c
It will of course be obvious that the flame may be lowered by the ordinary manipulation of the handle 31 without effecting the operation of my device. I
It will thus be seen that I have produced a device which will be simple in construction, and will accomplish all the objects herein set forth in an efficient manner.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same and that various changes relative to the size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1 In a device of the class described, the combination with a gas burner having a gas cook, a latch box positioned adjacent to said burner, a latch positioned within said latch box, a spring secured to said latch box and said'latch, an inclined strip positioned within said latch box, said strip being of less width than width of latch box, a notch formed in said latch, a heat controlled element positioned adjacent to said burner and adapted to be contacted by the flame therefrom, a nose formed on said heat controlled element, said nose being adapted to extend into said latch boxfor the purpose of engaging said latch when said burner is lit, means for connecting the latch to said gas cook of said burner, for the purpose specified In testimony whereof I affixiny signature.
ARTHUR R. THOMPSON.
