This invention relates to the art of damper controls. The primary object of the invention is to provide a control means which will be operated automatically upon openin of the fire box door to open a damper in the smoke pipe that may have been previously closed so that the fireman will not be subjected to a blast of smoke when the door is opened. Another primary is object is to provide in combination with such an automatic control means, means permitting the manual opening of the damper and means for retaining the damper in the open position while the firebox door is closed as may be desired.
A further important object is to provide means in conjunction with the above indicated automatic means whereby, although the damper may have been in the open por'ie sition when the door was opened, the damper will be returned to the closed position following the closing of the door.
These and other objects will become apparent in the following description of one as form of the invention as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a warm air furnace embodying my invention;

Fig. 3, a detail on an enlarged scale of the means for holding the damper open; and
Fig. 4, a detail in top plan view of the operating lever.
Referring to the drawings, in which like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, immediately below the fire boX door 10 toward the hinged side thereof I provide the two ears-11 and 12 to rockably receive therethrough in a horizontal position the leg 13 of the cam lever 14. This lever 14 is bent substantially at right angles to the leg 13 from along side of the ear 11 and thence upwardly and outwardly as indicated in Figs. 1, 2 and 4. I secure one end of the chain 15 to the outer end of the lever 14 and carry the chain upwardly and over a pulley 16 which is secured to some overhead member 17 whereii) by the chain between the lever 14 and the pulley 16 is carried at an angle from the vertical to be inclined somewhat toward the door 10.
The chain 15 is carried from over the pulley 16 rearwardly over the'second pulley 18 and thence downwardly to the damper lever 19. The damper 20 is rockably mounted within the smoke pipe 21 and is of the type having one side weighted so that the damper will normally assume a position in a vertical plane to come to the closed position as indicated in Fig. 2. The chain 15 is proportioned as to length so that when the damper 20 is in the closed position, the lever 14 will be held upwardly thereby as shown in Fig. 2 whereby the door 10, upon being opened, will by its lower edge strike the lever 14 and slide th'ereover to rock the lever 14 downwardly to substantially a horizontal position and thereby pull on the chain 15 to rock the damper 20 through the lever 19 to a horizontal or open position. The lever 19 is mechanically attached to the damper 20 in the manner well known to those versed in the art.
Above the door 10 and to the right thereof at a position removed somewhat beyond the chain 15 I position a stove bolt 22 to have. a threaded length exposed toward'the general direction of the chain. The bolt 22 is here shown as being passed through the lap joint of the housing of the furnace. Through one of the'links of the chain 151 engage a ring 23 at a position normally above the bolt 22 when the damper 20 isin the closed position; Now when it is desired to have a more rapid burning fire in the furnace, the damper 20 is required to be shifted to the open or horizontally disposed low but will not drop beyond a position whereby the lever 14 is not pushed down further as the door 10 may be opened thereover. In other words the position of the lever 14 even though the ring 28 is hooked over the bolt 22 is always sufficiently high as to be struck by the lower edge of the door and pushed down further as the door is opened. 7
WVhen the ring 23 is engaged over the end of the bolt 22 and the door 10 is opened, the lower edge of the door 10 will rub over the lever 14 and push it downwardly to lower the ring 28 and at the same time pull the ring over away from the bolt 22 to the original straight line of the chain. Since the bolt 22 is removed from the normal straight line position of the chain 15, the initial pull of the lever 14; tends to draw the chain 15 back to the straight line position with the result that the ring 23 is not only pulled downwardly but is pulled sideways toward the straight line. The threaded corrugations on the bolt end aid in retaining the ring 23 in position.
While I have here shown and described my invention in the one form as now best known to me, it is obvious that structural changes may be made from that form without departing from the spirit of the invention, and I, therefore, do not desire to be limited to that precise form, nor any more than may be required by the following claims.
I claim:
1. A damper control for a furnace-having a fire-box door and a shiftable damper normally returning to a closed position. comprising a cam lever rockably mounted adjacent said door and a chain connected to said lever and carried and connected to said damper whereby the closing of the damper shifts said chain to pull the lever into the path of the door upon its being opened and the opening of the door rocks said lever to pull the chain in the opposite direction to open said damper, and means associated with the chain independent of said door for holding said damper open, the opening of said door releasing said means.
2. For a furnace having a fire-box door and a shiftable damper in a flue from the furnace, said damper being weighted to return normally to a closed position, a cam lever'rockably mounted adjacent the door,
and a chain connected to the lever and carried upwardly over a pulley and around to the damper, said chain being of a length to hold'the said lever in the path of the door upon its opening when the said damper is closed, a ring carried by the chain at a distance from the lever, and a ring engaging member substantially horizontally disposed and carried by the furnace at a distance laterally from the normal line of travel of the chain.
3. For a furnace having a fire-box door and a shiftable damper in a flue from the furnace, said damper being weighted to return normally to a closed position, a cam lever rockably mounted adjacent the door, and a chain connected to the lever and carried upwardly over a pulley and around to the damper, said chain being of a length to hold the said lever in the path of the door upon its opening when the said damper is closed, a ring carried by the chain at a distance from the lever, and a ring engaging member substantially horizontally disposed and carried by the furnace at a distance laterally from the normal line of travel of the chain, said member having corrugations on its under side into which said ring may engage.
