COMBINATION DUPLEX GAS-VALVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 767,464, dated August 16, 1904.

will guard against turning on the main sup ply of gas until gas to the pilot-light has been turned on.
An object is to allow both valves to be free to be operated when the attendant intentionally desires to operate the same, both valves being free at all times to be opened and closed independently of the otherthat is to say, this invention is especially desirable for use where the main burner is ordinarily inaccessible and is to be ignited by a jet from another burner called the pilot-light.
An object of this invention is to so construct the valve that the necessity of its manipulation will suggest to the attendant the appropriate manner of turning on the gas and will also suggest to him the necessity of igniting the pilot-light before turning on the gas to the main burner, so that any danger of explosions or concussion from the ignition of an accumulated body of gas in the cavity of the water-heater or other appliance may be avoided. 7
This invention maybe carried out in various ways, and I do not limit myself to any particular mode or form of applying the same.

l is a main supply-pipe. 2 3 are the branches therefrom, controlled, respectively, by valves a 5, which are furnished with handles 6 7, respectively. The handle 6 is constructed and arranged to form a cover, guard, or shield for the handle 7 when both valves are closed, as shown in Fig. I. The handle 6 is desirably slotted, as clearly shown in Fig. II, and the handle 7 moves freely through said slot to allow the two handles to be independently operated. The handle 7 may be furnished with a portion 8, by which said handle may be manipulated to forcibly close the valve 5 when valve 4 is closed.

It is to be understood that I do not limit myself to any special arrangement of the valves or of the extent to which they are to be turned in order to be opened, the form which I have shown being that which I deem most desirable for common use.
The valve-plugs b and b are'desirably parallel, being the ordinary form of taper valveplugs. The slot'e of the-handle 6 may be of any desired form; but it is to be understood that any form of handle 6 which affords a practical cover or shield to interfere with access to the handle 7 when both valves are closed will serve the purpose of this invention.
In practical use when both valves are closed the handle 6 forms a guard to interfere with the manipulation of the handle 7, so that the most convenient way for the attendant to operate the valves will be first to throw up the handle 6 of the pilot 4L into the position indicated in dotted lines. Then the pilot light is to be ignited, after which the main-valve handle 7 may be thrown up into the position indicated by dotted lines in Fig. I or into any intermediate position, whereupon the gas [lowing through the pipe 3 to the main burners (not shown) will be ignited by the flame from the pilot-light (not shown) in the usual way. Then the pilot-valve handle 6 will be thrown down into closed position. (shown in solid lines in Fig. 1,) and the valve 5 may be left open as long as desired. \Vhen it is desired to close said valve, this is readily done by manipulating the handle 7, which is exposed while in its open position. When the handle is brought down into closed position, a small portion 8 may project above the handle 6 in order to insure perfect closing of the valve 5. The handle 7 is at all times free for regulating the valve 5 without any interference from any of the other parts of the appliance.

NV hat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States,
1. The combination of two valves having parallel axes and furnished with independently-operating handles, one of the handles extending above and partially inclosing the other in its closed position to form a guard for the same, whereby the operation of the guarding-handle before the operation of the guarded handle is more convenient than to operate them in any other order.
2. The combination of two valves having parallel axes and furnished with independently-operating handles, one of the handles in its closed position being extended out in the operative plane of and partially inclosing the other to form a guard for the same, whereby the operation of the guarding-handle before the operation of the guarded handle is more convenient than to operate them in any other order.
3. The combination of two valves having parallel axes and furnished with independently-operating handles, the free end of each of the handles being provided with a projection and one of them partially inclosing the other to form a guard therefor in its closed position, the projection on the guarded handle extending slightly above the guarding-handle when in said closed position.
4:. The combination of two valves having parallel axes and furnished, respectively, with handles, one of said handles being slotted and the other handle working in said slot and free of engagement therewith and being shielded by said slotted handle when both valves are closed.
