GAS-BURNER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 8, 1920.
Application filed May 17, 1917. Serial No. 169,297.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN A. FRY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of lVayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Burners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accom panying drawings.
This invention relates to burners designed for use in gas stove ovens and more particularly to the construction and arrangement of burners employed in gas ranges or the like, and in which the oven burners are of the type in which there are a plurality of separately controlled sections.
In gas ranges of this type it is desirable to provide means whereby this burner, as well as all of the open-top burners of the range, can be controlled from the front thereof, all of the controlling valves being preferably arranged in alinement.
The present invention contemplates an improved construction whereby the separately controlled burner sections are cast or otherwise formed integral and preferably provided with integral oflset or bent sections which project through the oven wall and areprovided with means for coupling the burner sections to the branch pipes leading from the gas supply; to provide an integral forward extension of the burner sections which will facilitate the lighting of the burner, this extension also forming a brace member between the sections; to so construct and arrange the parts that the gas cook or valve controlling the front section also controls the lighter extension, this avoiding the necessity of separate lighting mechanism and control valves therefor; to provide a burner construction of the character above referred to which can be employed in gas ranges having the oven located either at the left or right of the open-top section; to provide a burner construction which can be economically manufactured and easily attached in place or, removed; and in general to provide a new and improved burner construction for ranges or the like In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a top plan view partly in section of a gas range embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view of the oven burner construction;
Fig. 3 is a cross-section on the line 8-3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is an enlarged cross-section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1;
Figs. 5 and 6 are enlarged detail views of the clamping plates for the oven burner section;
Fig. 7 is a cross-section on the line 77 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 8 is an enlarged fragmentary perspective view of the clamping plate.
In detail A designates a gas range having an open-top section B. and an oven section C located at one side of the open-top section. A plurality of burners D, D, D D and D are provided for the open-top section, these burners being connectedto the gas supply pipe E through branch pipes controlled by suitable gas cocks or valves F, F, F F and F The oven section C is provided with a burner G formed of separately controlled front and rear-burner sections G and G preferably connected by an integral section G which is in communication with the interior of the rear section G but has no interior communication with the front burner section G. The burner construction is also provided with a forwardly projecting lighter section G which extends to a posi tion near the oven door. The portions G and G of the oven burner are independently supplied through branch pipes controlled by gas cocks or valves J and J respectively, these valves being located at the front of the range, and preferably in alinement with the valves F, F, etc. of the opentop section.
When it is desired to light the oven, the valve J controlling the front burner section G is opened. This also provides a flow of gas to the jets J of the lighter G. The flame then passes back along the lighter and ignites the gas flowing from the jets in the front burner section G. The control valve J is then opened and the gas passing through the rear burner section G also extends into the section G which has a row of jet openings J extending forward to a point of proximity to the section G. The flame will thus be carried back along the section G to the rear burner G If it is desired to light only the rear section the operation is the same except that the valve J is closed after the rear burner section has been lighted.
In manufacturing of stoves, ranges or the like it is customary to form gas ranges of this type with the oven located either at the right or the left of the open-top section. To avoid the necessity of providing different constructions of oven burners for the different locations of the oven with reference to the open-top, I have provided a novel arrangement and mounting of the oven burner section whereby it can be reversed from the position shown in Fig. l and employed on a range where the oven is located at the left of the open-top section. Also this oven burner section is so constructed that while the burner sections G and Gr are independently controlled, they can be integrally formed and assembled as a complete unit.
In the particular construction shown the rear burner section G is provided with a portion extending through the oven wall L and bent toward the front. The front burner section G also has a portion K eX- tending through the oven wall L and bent toward the front. This last projecting portion K is relatively short so that both sections K and K preferably terminate adjacently. Near their front they are connected by an integral cross bar M and their ends are suitably threaded to receive couplings N and N by which they are connected to the branch pipes O and 0.
As shown in detail in Fig. 4; the burner sections G and G are provided with ridges Q, Q, Q and Q4 the ridges Q and Q being located in the top half of the burner and the ridges and Q on the lower half. Vilhere the burner is used with an oven located at the right of the open-top, as shown in Fig. 1, the gas jets Q are drilled or otherwise formed through the ridges Q and Q. If, however, the burner section is employed with a range having the oven located at the left the gas jets are formed through the ridges Q and Q5 Thus the same construction can be employed with either location of the even by simply reversing the position of the burner sections to extend either to the left or to the right of the branch pipes O and 0. Also it will be noticed that this arrangement permits the employment of similarly formed branch pipes O and O and the entire construction is standard for either location of the oven. At their free ends the burner sections G and G are provided with bearing portions R and R which rest in seats R and R formed in a bracket R which is bolted to the oven wall, this bracket being also interchangeable. 7
To facilitate the assembling of the burners, the oven wall L is formed with a relatively large opening L through which the projecting ends of the burner sections G and G extend. To attach the burners to the oven and rigidly lock them in'place, there are preferably employed clamping plates 5 and T. The clamping plate S, which fits on the outer wall of the oven, is formed of two sections S and S as shown in Fig. 5, while the inner clamping plate T is similarly formed of sections T and T as shown in Fig. 6. Each of these sections S and S and T and T 2 have semi-circular seats U which cooperate to fit snugly around the portions of the burner sections which project through the wall. The section S also has a lug S which overlaps a similar lug S on the sections while the sections of the clamping plate T are provided with similar overlapping lugs T and T 2 Bolt holes S and T are formed in these overlapping lugs and receive the clamping bolt W. When the wing nut V on this bolt is tightened up the parts will be locked in rigid position and it is obvious that the same clamping plates could be employed where the oven is located at the left hand side of the open-top as where it is located at the right.
The oven burner, as above described, can be cast or otherwise economically formed, and as it is a unit construction can he quickly attached and detached from the oven. Also it involves the interchangeable feature above described, although the invention is not necessarily limited to the details of construction set forth.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. The combination with an open-top section and an oven section adjacent thereto, of a gas conduit extending along the front of said open-top, and a burner for said oven, comprising an integral construction having burner sections terminating in supply connections leading toward said gas conduit and extending through the wall of the oven into the plane of saidopen top section, and a mounting for said burner sections constructed to hold the same in ovens located at either side of the open-top section.
2. The combination with an open-top section and an oven section adjacent thereto and having an apertured wall, of an oven burner comprising a plurality of burner sections having forwardly bent portions positioned exterior of the oven, and a clamping plate for said burner comprising a plurality of plate members formed in sections, and a clamping member for locking said sections in position.
3. A gas burner blank, comprising a tubular member having longitudinal ridges at opposite sides thereof for alternative use for jet openings, according as the blank is used in a right handor left hand oven.
