To all whom z'tmay concern:
Be it known that I, JEssE T. RnzNoR, a citizen of the United States,-. and a resident of Mercer, in the county of Mercer and State of Pennsylvania, have invented agn'ew and Improved Gas-Heater, of which the following is a full, clear, and exactdescription.
My present invention relates particularly to gas heaters of the reflector type, and an object of the inventionis to provide means whereby proper combustion of the gas will be maintained and interference with the flame by air currents and eddies will be prevented. v a I a v A further object of the invention is to provide a heater which overcomes the clan ger of setting fire to ones clothing by flames issuingfrom the heater at the front, or by the clothing being drawn into contact with the flame by air currents. With gas heaters of the reflector'type, and in which a burner is disposed at the back of the heater above the reflector, the jets of the burner being disposed forwardly, full gas pressure not infrequently results in the flame issuing beyond the front of the heater. I provide in the present instance a burner at the front of the heater with the jets disposed in a rearward direction, and thereby overcome the dangerof the flames issuing beyond the frontof the heater. In connection with the burner, also, I provide for maintaining a supply of air to properly sustain combustion, andlI provide means for preventing the air currents, counter-currents and eddies from interfering with the flame, and incidentally preventing the cloth: ing of a persongstanding near the heater from being drawninto the flame, as well as preventing children from reaching the flame and'beingburned. The body 10 above the front opening llconstitutes What maybe termed afiame chamber, at the front of which is a horizontally disposed burner tube 14, having a longitudinal series of nipples or tips 15, provided with jet orifices disposed toward the interior of the heater. I Above the burner at the top of the flame chamber 13 is a flame which issecured to the front l0 ofthe body and 1 extends rearwardly therefrom at a slight inclination in the direction of the back of the heater, terminating short of said back. A second baffle plate 17 is disposed reversely tothe baffle plate '16, being secured to the back of the heater and extending forwardly a short, distance beyond the inner end of the bafiie plate 16. The bafiie plate 16 is preferably provided with side flanges 16*, which are secured to the sides I or their equivalents, there be-. ing similar flanges 17 on the baffle plate 17 plate or bafiieplate 16,

and in some cases the heater body will be provided with a flue connection 19 at the back, in Which event much of the products of combustion will pass through the flue.
In order to produce a steady flame and improved; combustion, I provide; an ,air chamber 20 in frontof the burner tube 14. In the form shown in Figs. 1 to 3, the said air chamber 20 is formed by a vertically curved plate 21 secured at its upper and lower ends in any. suitable manner tothe front of thebody, andforming part of said the air will pass through said holes and upthe air chamber 20 over the j and rearwardly between the.
wardly through burner pipe 14, said burner tube and the baffle or flame, plate 16. Air entering the open front 11 will also pass upwardly to the flame chamber -13,'to mingle with the air from chamber 20, above and in the rear of the burner.
I have found that air entering the heater in front of the reflector and rising in the heater, results in currents and eddies that tend tocheck combustion and curl the flame backwardly, and in order to overcome thisl provide a 8011361122 disposed horizontally, or approximately soin V reflector and the burner adjacent to the top of the front opening 11. The screen is formed of wire mesh which "does not seriously interfere with the reflection of. the flame, and'it so modifies the air currents and eddies that the air rises throughthe'screen Without disturbing the flame or interfering with combustionybut onthe contrarythe air passing upwardly, co-acts with the air pass ing from the chamber 20 beneath the flame plate 16. Theresult is,'that excellent com bustion and a steady flame areproduced.
Furthermore, 1 the screen prevents clothing or the like'from being drawn into the flame,
and children arebarred from reaching the flame, so that'absolute safety is attained, withihigh'efliciency. r
The chamber 20is closed at the front below the burner tube 14:, by alpartition plate 14;, which extends from the underside j of the burnertube to the' bottom of chamber 20. The partition 14 thus prevents the current of air which enters through the open front 11, from passing'forwardly to the chamber 20 and preventsany air from the chamber 20 being drawn upwardly and re'arwardly in front of the burner frombelowthe latter. The result is that the air currents are prevented from causing afluttering of the flame, so that the flame will tion.- Moreover, the current of air passing over the burner tube and beneath the shield plate 16, prevents direct contact of the flame.

= Tosecure the burner tube 14 and afford access tothe same at one end, a plate 23 is provided, closing an opening in the adjacent side of the-body 10, and a plate 24: is provided, closing an opening in the heateribody at the side adjacent, to the opposite end'of theburner tube 14:. The last mentioned end of the burnertube is closed by a cap nut 25 7 outside of the plate 2 1. The fitting 29"is further provided with a branch or nipple 31 which leads to an elongated box 32 in the interior of the body, and to said box 82 the burner tube 14c. is secured at the opposite side of said box from the entrance of the nipple/131. The box 32 is provided with ears 32 at the sides. to'receive any suitable'fasteningdevices, such as bolts or. screws. p

A further slight modification is illustrated in Fig. 6, in which the extension '21 of the front 10 corresponding with the extension 21 is deflected outwardly, instead ofbeing vertical as in Fig-5. Air is supplied tothe flame chamber 20 formed by the said extension 21' through the inlet holes. 21 v formed in the inwardly projecting lower end of said extension 21, and will pass up wardly above the burner tube, beneath the baffle plate 16 I In the form shown in Fig. 7 an extension 21 is given the form of three sides of a rectangular box in front of the burner tube 1a, thereby forming an air chamber 20 having air inlet holes-21 so that air will pass upwardly'over the burnertube beneath the baflie plate 16. comprising a hollow body open at the front near the bottom for the free inlet ofair, a
body rearwardly and'terminating shortof the back, forming a flame chamber, a burner baffie plate extending from the front of the r and discharging air 'above the burner, be-
tween the same and the baffle plate.
2. Ina heater ofthe character described,
a hollow body having a front open at the lower portion for the free inlet of air, a flame chamber in the heater above the said opening, a screen between the flame chamber and the open lower portion of the heater and a burner in the flame chamber above the screen.
3. In a gas heater of the character described, having a front opening at the lower portion, a burner disposed at the front of the heater and having rearwardly disposed jet openings, and a screen adjacent to the top of the front opening and below the said burner.
4. In a gas heater of the character described, a heater having a front opening at the lower portion for the free inlet of air,
a burner within the heater, at the front of the latter, and arranged to produce a rearwardly disposed flame, a flame plate above the said burner extending from the front of the heater rearwardly, means for supplying air from the front of the heater between the burner and flame plate, and a screen below the burner and adjacent to the top of the front opening.
