LIQUID-FUEL FITTING FOR FURNACE-FRONTS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 11, 1921.
Application filed. September 6, 1919. Serial No. 322,211.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, LAUNCELOT EUSTAOE SMITH, a subject of the King of Great Britain, managing director, Smiths Dock Company, Limited, High Docks, South Shields, in the county of Durham, England, Con- NELIS ZULvnR, engineer, a subject of the Queen of the Netherlands, of St. Helens Court, Great St. Helens, in the city of London, England, and HERBERT ALEXANDER THOMPSON, engineer, a subject of the King of Great Britain, of 9 Cleveland Terrace, North Shields, in the county of Northumberland, England, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Liquid-Fuel Fittings for Furnace-Fronts, of which the following is a speification.
This invention relates to improvements 1n liquid fuel fittings. and in the manner of mounting the same in forced or assisted draft furnace fronts of the kind comprising front and back plates spaced apart.
In the specification accompanying an application for Letters Patent Serial No. 322,212, filed September 6, 1919, a constructional arrangement is described for mounting liquid fuel burners in forced or assisted draft furnace fronts outside the tubular firing opening closed by the fire door, the burners being arranged within air supply tubes extending through'the front and back plates of the furnace front.
According to this invention in place of the air tubes passing through both plates, air cones are provided which pass through the back plate only. The burners supported in burner holders pass through holes in the front plates and extend across the air heating chamber between the front and back plates to positions respectively within the the said invention may be conveniently and advantageously carried into practice. In this drawing In this drawing Figure l is a sectional view, on the line ll Fig.2, of a Howden type furnace front hav ng this invention applied thereto.
F g. 2 is a sectional plan view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section taken on the line 3-3 in Fig. 1.
As shown in this drawing a is the front plate and Z) the back plate which together with the saddle plate 0 inclose an air heating chamber (Z outside the firing opening 6.
Burners f are held in burner holders 9 fitted in holes in the front plate a to which they are secured by flanges 76. Air cones 2' pass through holes in the back plate 6 to which they are secured by flanges j. Air regulator cones 7c are slidably mounted on the burners within the cones 2' but these cones may be fixed on the burners. When applying the invention to existing furnace fronts, if the spigot and rib Z, Z for supporting the saddle plate 0 are not of a suit able shape and dimensions to make a joint with the saddle plate along all its edges, the said plate may be formed with flanges m to abut against the said spigot and rib where necessary to form a closure, but the spigot and rib may be made of suitable shape so that the plate 0 may be made without flanges. Air admission valves 12 of the well known kind are provided on the saddle plate 0.
W hat we claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In combination, a furnace front having a firing opening, front and rear plates secured about the opening, a saddle plate connecting said front and rear plates and forming therewith an air heating chamber about the firing opening, said air heating chamber being in controlled communication with the atmosphere, burners held in said front plate and projecting through the air heating chamber, air cones mounted in said rear plate and setting up communication with the interior of the furnace and said air heating chamber, the inner ends of the burners lyand regulating cones ing in said air cones,
substantially as fitted within said air cones, described.
2. In combination, a furnace front having a firing opening therein front and rear plates spaced apart and extending about said firing opening, a saddle plate connecting the front and rear plates at their outer edges and constituting therewith an air heating chamber, means for controlling the supply of atmospheric air to said chamber, burners having their outer portions mounted in said front plate and projecting into and through said air heating chamber angularly toward the axis of the firing opening, air cones carried by said rear plate and receiving the inner ends of said burners, said cones comchamber and with the interior of said furnace, and movable regulating cones on the inner ends of said burners having adjusting means extending on the exterior of said front plate, substantially as described. 7
