UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JEROME E. LA VIGNE, or WATERBUEY, CONNECTICUT, Assrenon tro THE warns BURY BUCKLE CO., F WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT, .A
CORPORATION.
GAR'IER CLASP.
Application filed December' 31, 1928. Serial No. 529,634.
My invention relates to an improvement in garter clasps of the sc -called hook-andeye-type, the object being` to produce a simple, reliable and convenient clasp constructed wit-h particular reference to a highly attractive and classy appearance when in use.
With these ends in view, my invention consists in a garter clasp of' the hook-andeye type characterized by having its outer or hook-member formed with a shield or plate adapted in size and shape to substan tially cover and conceal the main body oi' the inner' or eye-member oi the clasp when the two members are hooked together as in use.
My invention further consists in a garter clasp characterized as described and having certain details of construction as will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings:
F 1 is a face view of a garter clasp embodying my invention and shown as applied to a garter;
Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof;
Fig. 3 is a broken sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 4 4 of Fig. l;
Fig. 5 is a detached view of the rear face of the outer or hook-member of the clasp;
Fig. l6 is an edge view thereof;
Fig. 7 is a detached face view of the eyemember of the clasp;
Fig. S is a side View thereof;
Fig. 9 is a perspective view of the hookmember of one of the modied forms which my improved clasp may assume.
In carrying out my invention, the outer or hoolcmember of the clasp consists of a relatively-large oval or shield-shaped plate 10 formed upon its outer edge with two spacedapart hooks 11 turned inward so as to lie in a plane parallel with the plane of its tace. Upon its inner edge the plate 10 is formed with an offsetting integral bar 12 forming a webbing-slot 13 through which the end 14 et' the elastic gal'tenwebbing is passed, the said end of the webbing being provided, as shown, with the usual slide 15 ior its adjustment in length.
The inner or eye-member 16 of the clasp is formed with a central engagingbar 17 and two parallel side- bars 18 and 19 spaced apart from it to produce webbing-slots 20 through which the end 21 of the webbing is threaded in the usual manner. The bar 17, as shown, is struck up on the opposite sides of its center to i'orm eye-loops 22 spaced apart to conform to the spacingof the hooks 11 aforesaid. and designed to receive them. The loops 22 form, in effect, the eyes of the inner or eye-member of the clasp which l have described as of the so-called hook-and-eye type.
The plate 10 of the outer or hook-member of the clasp is of such size and shape that when its hooks 11 are drawn home into the loops 22 of the inner or eyesmember of the clasp, the main body of the latter will be entirely concealed, as shown in Fig. 1, so that when the clasp is in use only the endportions of the bars 12 and 18 appear. rlhe large plate or shield 10 not only stabilizes the clasp but also gives it a highly finished and ornamental appearance when in use, that is, when its two members are hooked together.
In Fig. 9 I have shown the outer or hookmember of a modified form of clasp, in which the shield 23 is provided with a single hook 24 and a single loop 25, instead of two hooks, as in the form shown in the other figures. In this modiiied form of clasp, an inner or eye-member (not shown) will be provided, having but a single loop for the reception of the hook 24.
I claim:
l. ln a garter clasp of the hook-andeye type, the combination with an outer or hookmember made in one piece and comprising a relatively-large shield-like plate formed upon its outer edge with an inwardly-turned shankless hook, the bend of which substantially coincides with the said edge, and upon its inner edge with a spacing-slot; of an inner or eye-member formed with two spaced-apart webbing-slots, the inner walls of which are formed by the opposite sides et a bar parallel with such slots and formed with a struclrsup loop for receiving the hook of the said outer member, which is adapted in size and shape to cover the main body ot the inner or eye-member when the two members are operatively engaged and the said hook drawn home in the said loop.
2. In a garter clasp of the hook-and-eye coV type, the Combination with an outer o1? liook Inemloei` ina-de in one piece and Comprising a shieldlike plate formed upon its outer edge with Jawo inwardly-turned hooks` spaced apart and formed upon its inner edge with a webbing-Slot; of an inner or eye-member formed with two spaced-apart webbing-slots located on opposite sides of a. bar parallel therewith said bm' being formed with two speced-epart struck-up loops for receiving the hooks of the outer-member, which is mlupied in size and shape to Cover the main body of the inner or eye-member when the two members are operatively engaged and the said hooks drawn home Vin the said loops.
In testimony whereof, I have Signed this specicaton.
JEROME R. LA VIGNE.
