This invention relates to an improvement on that class of implements for notching patterns of garments which I have described in my Patent No. 169,066, dated October 19,1875, and which consists essentially of a foot-plate supporting a hollow slotted standard with a plunger reciprocating vertically within the standard, provided with a knife projecting beyond and through the slotted standard.

'My present improvement consists in combining with the foot-plate, the hollow standard, and the vertical]y-reciprocatin g plunger a knife with a V-shaped or U-shaped cutting-edge, the loose end of which is guided in a groove in the slotted standard, and the cutting-edge of which co-operates with a receiver in the foot-plate of corresponding shape, so that the patterns after having been cut out can be pro vided with plainly-visible marks which form guides in the operation of finishing the garments.

In the drawing, the letter A designates the foot-plate of my implement, which is, by preference, made circular, with a flat bottom and a convex top, its edge being sharp, so that it can readily be pushed beneath the pile of patterns to be operated upon. Said foot-plate may, however, be made in any other convenient form or shape. From the center of said foot-plate rises a standard, B, which is bored out to receive the plunger 0 and also a spring, D, that serves to force the plunger up. To the upper end of said plunger is secured a handle, E, which serves to depress the same against the action of its spring, said handle being so formed that it extends over the outer surface of the standard B, and assists in keeping the plunger steady. To the bottom end of said plunger is secured a knife, F, which extends through slots at a in the standard The outer ends of this knife are bent so that their cutting-edges become V-shaped or U- shaped, and the free ends of said knife are guided in grooves'b b provided for their reception in the standard B. In the bottom flange of said standard are formed receivers c c, which correspond in shape to the cuttingedges of the knife, and into which said cutting-edges drop When the plunger is depressed. These receivers are formed by steel plates 01 d, which are secured to the foot-plate, (see Fig. 3,) and which form sharp edges to co-operate with the cutting-edges of the knife.

By these means 1 am enabled to cut clear through a pattern .or a pile of patterns without difficulty, and I- am enabled .to produce semicircular or V'shaped notches or marks in a pile of patterns or in a single pattern, (see Fig. 5,) and such marks are clearly visible, so that they form safe guides in finishing the garments for which the patterns are intended.

I disclaim in this application for a. patent everything shown and described in my Patent No. 169,066.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In an implementfor notching patterns of garments, a knife with a V-shaped or a U- shaped cutting-edge, in combination. with a foot-plate, a hollow slotted standard, and a reciprocating plunger, the standard being pro- I vided with a groove-guide for the free end of the knife, substantially as shown and described.

2. The combination, with a knife having a V-shaped or U-shaped cutting-edge, with the hollow slotted standard and with the footplate, of a receiver, a, corresponding in shape to the cutting-edge of the knife, substantially as set forth.
