Patented June 3,1873.
AM PHOTU-LIT-HOGRAPHIL co. m. (ossonns ma 0558.)
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
WILLIAM C. MGGILL, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN BUTTON-HOLE CUTTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 139,472, dated June 3, 1873 application filed May 1, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM G. MCGILL, of the city of Cincinnati and State of Ohio, have invented certain Improvements in Button-Hole Gutters, of which the following is a specification; and I do hereby declare that in the same is contained a full, clear, and exact description of my said invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to a device by means of which button-holes may be cut in cloth or other material parallel or at right angles with the edge of the cloth, and at any desired distance therefrom; and consists, principally, in the arrangement of a knife by which the incision is made, with referenceto a guard fastened to or forming a part of the instrument, and the adaptatlon of a portion of the guard as a gage to regulate the margin or the distanee from the button-hole to the edge of the material; and, further, in the use of a stiletto in combination with the cutting mechanism.
In the further description of my invention which follows, due reference must be had to theaccompanying drawing, which is an isometrical view of my improved button-hole cutter, showing it partially open.
A A are the shanks of the cutter, pivoted at a, and provided with the eyes or rings b for the admittance of the thumb and finger 0f the operator. B is a triangnlarly-shaped knife, fastened to the shank A in such manner as to bear against the sides of the shank A and the guard, shown by 0, when the instrument is closed. D is a slot between the guardingpiece' 0 and the shank A, into which the material to be cut is introduced.
It will be observed that the end of the guard 0 next to the rings bis turned at a right angle with the shank. The part of the guard marked a, being bent as shown, offers no obstruction to the material when passed longitudinally of the instrument, but serves as a gage to the width of the margin, above referred to, the width being limited to the distance between the inner edge of the part c and that of the part of the guard U opposing the knife B. The upper edge of this part of the guard is sharpened as a cutting-surface. In cutting crosswise of the material the margin is limited to the distance between the point of the knife B as it enters the material and the inner edge .of the part c of the guard O. I
E is an ordinary stiletto, fastened to or forming a part of the shank A, adapted to be used for a variety of purposes in the prosecution of fancy needle-work.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and wish to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
In combination with the upper cutting-edge of a button-hole cutter, a lower shank bent at right angles, when arranged to operate substantially as herein shown and specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto sub scribed my name in the city of Baltimore this 7 30th day of April, in the year of our Lord 1873. t
WM. 0. MoGILL.
