COLLAR ATTACHING DEVICE.

This invention relates to improvements in collar attaching devices and has for its principal object to provide a device to be used in lieu of the usual collar button, whereby the ends of a'neck band of a shirt may be joined and whereby the ends of a detachable collar may be connected to the neckband of the shirt.

It is also an object of the invention to provide a device of the above character in the form of a short, flexible cord, or the like, with an anchor button at one end to be used in combination with a small metallic clamp or clip; the cord being extendible through the button holes of the neckband of the shirt to draw the ends together and also through the button holes of the collar after it has been applied to the shirt and the clip being applicable to the overlapped ends of the collar to hold them together about the neck and serving also as a means to which the end of the cord that is projected through the button holes of the neckband and collar may be detachably held to retain all of the parts in proper relation.

Other objects of the invention reside in the various details of construction and in the combination of parts whereby the device is rendered easy to apply or remove and effective in use, as is hereinafter described.

In accomplishing the objects of the invention, I have provided the improved details of construction, the preferred forms of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein I Figure 1 is a perspective viewof the parts of the neckband and collar attaching device embodied by this invention.

Figure 2 is an edge view of the collar connecting clip.

Figure 3 is a top view of the same.

Figure 4 is a sectional detail, illustrating the relation of the neck band, collar and attaching parts when in use.

Figure 5 is a vertical section taken on the line 5-5 in Figure 4.

Figure 6 is a perspective view illustrating the mode of applying the attaching cord to the neck band of the shirt.

Figure 7 illustrates the collar as applied to the shirt and the collar connecting clip attached thereto, and showing the attaching cord extended through the button holes of the neckband and collar.

Figure 8 is a similar View, showing the attaching cord as held secure by the clip while the latter is applied to the collar.

Referring more in detail to the drawings 1 designates what may be the neckband of a shirt provided at its ends with the

usual button holes

2 and 3 and, at the back, with a button hole 4 for the reception of a collar button or the like 5 for attaching a collar thereto. 6 designates what may be a detachable collar of any of the commonly used forms adapted for attachment at the back to the neckband 1 by the button 5 and having its end portions 6 and 6 adapted to be brought together in overlapped relation and provided with the usual button holes 7 and 8.

The present device is used both for attaching the ends of the neckband and also for attaching the overlapped ends of the collar to the neckband. It comprises a short, flexible connecting member 10 whichmay be a piece of cord, tape, chain or any other equivalent, and which is provided at its inner end with an anchor means in the form of a button or disk 11 and at its outer end has an ornamental ferrule 12 for facilitating its being projected through the button holes of the shirt band and collar. This cord is used in combination with a spring metal clip 13 of novel construction, as shown best in

1, 2 and 3, and which comprises a spring metal plate that is bent centrally upon itself to provide insideand outside,

14 and 15 providing an intermediate, upwardly opening space 16 of wedge-like form. These plates are provided at one side near their upper edges with laterally opening recesses 17 which are in registration with each other and, when the clip is applied to the collar as presently described, they are intended to receive the button holes in the overlapped ends of the collar, as is shown in Figures 7 and. 8.

Extending from the side edge of the forward or outside plate 14 and'just below the recess 17 therein, is a back-turned spring clip 18 providing a laterally opening mouth 19 into a wedge-like recess 20 formed between the clip and the plate 14, and within which the end of the cord 10 may be secured to hold the parts in functional relation, as will presently be described.

Assuming the parts of the device to be so constructed, they are used as follows: First, the cord 10 is extended through the

button holes

2 and 3 of the neckband, as shown in the neck band and having Figure 6, to draw the ends of the band together; the button 11 serving to retain the end of the cord from pulling through. The collar 6 is then attached to the shirt band at the back and the cord is extended through the button holes 7 and 8 of the overlapped ends of the collar and the collar attaching clip 13 is then applied to these overlapped ends to hold the collar in proper adjustment according to the size of the collar band or to suit the wearer. The clip is applied by pro jecting it upwardly over the overlapped ends 6 and 6 of the collar, as shown in Figure 5, so that these ends are clipped and held secure in the wedge shaped recess 16 between the plates 14c and 15, and the clip is so located that the recess 17 of the outer plate will partially embrace the button hole 8, as shown in Figure 7. The collar is then attached to the shirt band by drawing the end of the cord 10 into the mouth 19 and wedge shaped slot 20 formed by the back-turned clip 18; the cord being drawn up so as to adjust the neckband to the neck of the wearer and also to hold the collar ends, which are connected by the clip 13, to the neckband.

Devices of this character are suitable for detachable collars of various designs, either starched or unstarched, and they permit the neckband of the shirt to be adjusted to suit the comfort of the wearer and they also permit the collar to be adjusted to lit the neckband and also to suit the comfort of the wearer, regardless of the posit-ions of the but ton holes. In this way, it differs from the usual collar button, in that the latter does not permit any adjustment of the neckband or collar.

Such devices may be made of an ornamental character and do not interfere with the wearing of neckties which, as ordinarily used, would cover the clip.

It is readily apparent that various details of construction could be made wi hout departing from the spirit of the invention, and, for this reason, I do not oesire the claims to be limited only to the device as herein shown and described.

I claim:

1. A neck band and detachable collar, attaching means comprising a yieldable clip applicable to the end portions of a collar to hold them in overlapped relation and a flexible means adjustably connecting the ends of detachable connec- -neck band and collar and tion with the clip to adapt the collar to the band.

2. An attaching means for shirt neck bands with detachable collars comprising a clip that is adapted to be applied to the overlapped ends of the collar to hold them together and a flexible member adapted to be extended through openings at the ends of the neck band and collar to draw the once together and adapted for detachable connection with the clip.

3. An attaching means for shirt neck bands and detachable collars comprising a spring clip having opposedly related clamping means adapted to be applied to the overlapped ends of the collar to hold them in connected relation and a flexible connecting means with an anchor member at its inner end adapted to be extended through the button holes at the ends of the neck band and collar and adapted for detachable connection at its outer end with the clip as a means of attaching the collar to the neck band.

l. An attaching means for shirt neck bands with detachable collars, having button holes in their ends, comprising a plate that is bent upon itself to form a wedge shaped mouth adapted for receiving therein and gripping the overlapped ends of the collar and a spring clip forming a wedge shaped mouth and a hexible attaching cord adapted to be extended through the button holes of the shirt band and collar and provided at its inner end'with an anchor member and adapted for application at its outer end within the wedge shaped mouth of the clip to hold the cord against slippage.

5. An attaching means for with detachable collars with holes in their end portions, comprising a spring metal plate bent upon itself to form an upwardly opening, wedge shaped mouth. for receiving therein the overlapped ends of the collar, the outer blade having a spring clip integral therewith and forming a laterally opening, wedge shaped mouth and a flexible member extendible throughvthe button holes of the provided at its inher end with an anchor button and adapted for application at its outer end within the wedge shaped mouth of the clip to hold it against slippage. v
