COLLAR-FASTENING DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, FRANK A. GLASGOW, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Collar-Fastening Devices, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to devices that are used for fastening collars to the neckbands of shirts.
The main object of my invention is to provide a collar fastening device of simple construction which is so designed that the user will not have to insert one finger inside of the neckband of the shirt during the operation of fastening the collar to the neckband.
Another object is to provide a collar fastening device of the character above-described that will hold the collar in snug engagement with the neckbancl of the shirt. And still another object is to provide a collar fastening device consisting of a flexible member adjustably mounted on the neckband of a shirt, and equipped with means for securing the free ends of the collar, said means being so designed that it can also be used for holding a necktie in correct position.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view of a mans shirt equipped with one of my improved collar fastening devices and shows the method of using the device; and r Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the collar fastened in correct position.
Referring to the drawing which illustrates the preferred form of my invention, 1 designates the neckband of an open-front shirt, and 2 designates a collar which is secured to the rear of the neckband by the usual back collar-button 3.
My improved collar fastening device is used for securing the ends of the collar to the neckband and is intended to take the place of the usual front collar-button now generally used for securing the free ends of the neckband and attaching the ends of the collar thereto. Said device consists of a flexible member A which may be a piece of tape or a strip of any other suitable material that is adjustably mounted in loops 4: and 5, and provided at one end with a button or retaining device 6 of any suitable shape or design that is adapted to be inserted through the button-holes in the over- Specification of Letters Patent.

lapping portion of the neckband and in the ends of the collar, and provided at its opposite end with a ring 7 which is preferably of such a design that it can he slipped over the rear collar-button 3 after the member A has beenpulled taut so as to draw the ends of the collar into snug engagement with the neckband. The loop or guiding device 4 on the neckband 1 is preferably located at such a point that it will lie under the overlapping portion of the neckband in which the slit or opening 8 is formed, and the guiding loop 5 is located at some point intermediate the loop 4 and the back collar-button 3 so as to cause the tape or member A to lie underneath the collar at the front of the shirt and thus be hidden from view. If desired, the member A may be provided with an elastic portion 9 so as to facilitate attaching the rear end of the member A to the back collar-button 3.
In using the device the button or retaining member 6 on the front end of the member A is inserted through the slit or opening 8 in the overlapping portion of the neckband and through the button-holes in the ends of the collar, as shown in Fig. 1, and the member A is then pulled taut and secured to the back collar-button 3 or to any other suitable point on the shirt so as to draw the front of the collar into snug engagement with the neckband and also close the neckband at the front of the shirt.
If the necktie that is used is of that type that is provided on its under side with a collar-b-utton-engaging device, said device is slipped between the button 6 on the mem her A and the overlapping portion of the collar so that it will be drawn into snug engagement with the collar when the member A is tightened and thus insure the necktie remaining in correct position.
One advantage of a collar fastening device of the construction above-described is that it overcomes the necessity of the user inserting one finger inside of the neckband during the operation of securing the ends of the collar to the front of the neckband as is necessary when a front collar-button is used for fastening the ends of the collar to the shirt, thereby making it possible to attach a collar to a tight neckband quickly and easily. Another advantage of such a device is that it binds the free ends of the neckband and of the collar tightly together so that the collar feels snug and is not liable to pull away from the neckband. And still another advantage of such a device is that it securely holds the necktie in correct position.
The device does not detract from the appearance of the shirt and collar for when the collar is in position the portion of the memher A at the front of the shirt is hidden from view, and in view of the fact that the member A is held in operative position on the neckband by guides 01' loops there is no danger of its dropping off or becoming lost as very often occurs with the usual front collar-button. While I prefer to secure the rear end of the member A to the back collarbutton in the neckband of the shirt, I do not wish it to be understood that this is the only way that the member A can be fastened; nor is it absolutely necessary that the neckband be provided with two loops or guiding devices for one loop at the front of the neck band of either an open-front shirt or a closed-front shirt would hold the member A in position. I prefer to provide the member A at its front end with a flat ol')long-shaped button 6, as herein shown, but any suitable kind of retaining device could be used on the front end of the member A without departing from the spirit of my invention,
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A collar-fastening device consisting of a flexible member adjustably mounted in guides or loops on the outer side of the neckband of a shirt and extending around onehalf of the neckband from the front to the rear of same, a button or collar-retaining device on the front end of said member that is adapted to be inserted through the usual front buttonholes formed in the lower portion of a collar, and means on the opposite end of said flexible member for engaging the back collar-button in the neckband of the shirt.
2. A collar fastening device consisting of a flexible member adj List-ably mounted in guides or loops on the neckband of a shirt and provided at one end with a button or collar-retaining device that is adapted to be inserted through the front button-holes in the lower portion of a collar, and means on the opposite end of said flexible member for engaging the back collar-button in the neckband of the shirt, said flexible member having an elastic portion.
3. in combination, a shirt provided with a neckband, loops or guides on said neckband. a flexible member adjustably mounted in said guides and extending part way around the neckband, and a collar-retaining device on the front end. of said flexible member for securing the front ends of the collar.

In combination, a shirt provided with a neckband. loops or guides on said neck ban d. a flexible member adjustably mounted in said guides, a collar-retaining device on the front end of said flexible member for the purpose described, and a device on the rear end of said member for engaging the back collar-button in the neckband of the shirt for securing said member in adjusted position.
5. In combination, an open-front shirt provided with a neckband, the overlapping portion of which has a slit or opening adjacent the free end of same, loops or guides on said neckband. one of said guides being so arranged that it will lie under the overlapping portion of the neckband, a strip of flexible material adjustably mounted in said guides, and a button on the front end of said strip that is adapted to be inserted through the opening in the overlapping portion of the neckband and through the but ton-holes in the front of the collar that is used with the shirt.
