DANIEL M. READ, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN POCKET-BOOK FASTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 172,] 69, dated January 11, 1876; application filed November 13, 1875.
OAsE A.
To all whom it may concern:
'Be it known that I, DANIEL M. READ,'of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Looks for Pocket-Books, &c., of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a front view of my improved lock, shown as applied to a pocket-book. Fig. 2 is an under-side view of a modified form of the same. Fig. 3 is an under-side view of the lock shown in Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to improve the construction of locks for pocket-books, memorandum-books, and other similar articles, in such a way that the book or other article may be drawn snugly together without withdrawing the catch from the lock, and which shall leave the outer surface of the lock entirely smooth, and without any projecting knob or handle.
The invention consists of a fastening device, which comprises a spring-pressed sliding catch-bar, a series of ratchet-teeth formed on a slotted base-plate, and a catch-pin engaging with the ratchet-teeth, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
A represents the base-plate of the lock, which has an inwardly projecting flange formed around its edge, andiwhichhas points or claws a formed upon the edge of its flange for securing it to the pocket-book or other ar- .ticle. In the central part of the plate A is formed a longitudinal slot to receive the catch B, formed upon a plate or binding, O, attached to the flap of the pocket-book. The catch B, when inserted in the slot of the plate A, is held by a bar, D, placed in the cavity of the said plate A, and held forward against the said catch B by aspring, E. The forward movement of the bar 1) is limited by lugs or shoulders a formed upon the said plate A, and which are so formed as to overlap the ends of the bar D, and prevent it from droppingout. The middle part of the spring E is secured to a lug, a formed upon the plate A, to prevent the said spring from dropping out. Upon the rear sides of the ends of the bar D are formed shoulders d for the ends of the spring E to strike against. The shoulder of the catch B is slightly roundedloff, so that the said catch may be withdrawn by a slight oitward pull. The catch B is heldin any position into which it ismoved by ratchet-teeth F, formed upon the plate A, along one side of its slot, or upon the forward edge of thebar D. With this construction there is no 'projection upon the outside of the lock to wear the pocket or disfigure the lock. The ratchetteeth or serrations will enable the catch, stud, or pin to easily engage with the same, and to be slipped or moved along Without removing it from the lock-plate, after the spring-bar has been pressed aside to release the stud from the teeth.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Pat ent The combination of the slotted lock-plate A, having ratchet-teeth or serrations F, sliding locking-bar D, and spring E, with a catch,
B, on the flap of the pocket-book, substantial- 1y as herein shown and described.
