IMPROVEMENT IN CULINARY BOILERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 172,096, dated January 11, 1876; application filed November 17, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT T. DOSTER, of Bethlehem, in the county of Northampton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in (Julinary Utensils; and do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is avertioal longitudinal section. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, showing the flange of the lid encircling the outer Walls of the kettle.
The object of this invention is to provide a boiler or other vessel for cooking sauerkraut and other strong-smelling articles, whereby the effluvia therefrom will be carried into the fire, and thence up the chimney into the open air, preventin g the ofl'ensive odors from being diflused throughout the house.
The nature of the invention consists in the peculiar construction and combination of means for carrying into effect the object stated.
In carrying my invention into effect I arrange in one side of the vessel, and on the in ner side of the wall thereof, a pipe or tube, which, when it meets the bottom of the vessel, is bent or deflected till it reaches the center thereof, where it communicates, by an opening in said bottom, with the fire. The lid of the vessel has an opening, forming a communication with the interior, from which leads a pipe or tube, registering with that above described, located in the boiler.
The steam and odors arising from the article being cooked pass up through the opening in the lid, thence through the pipe proceeding therefrom to the tube in the boiler, whence it passes out of the opening in the bottom of the vessel into the fire. The draft in the fire produces a suction in the tubes, drawing the steam and odors through the latter into the flames, and thence up the flue or chimney.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, A shows a boiler or other similar vessel, to the inner side of the walls of which is attached or formed a pipe or conduit, B. This conduit bends or deflects when it meets the bottom (J, proceeding along the latter until it reaches the center or an approximate point, where it forms a communication with an opening, 0, in said bottom.
D shows thelid, having an opening, 01, forming a communication with a pipe, E, which is bent so as to pass through thelid at e, and
enter the conduit B. The steam and odors from the vessel pass through this system of pipes and openings into the fire, and up the chimney out into the air, preventing the pollution of the atmosphere in 'the house by the efliuvia of sauerkraut or other noisome-smelling substance.
The flange d of the lid may be made to slip outside of the walls of the body A, as shown in Fig. 2, thereby rendering the said lid tighter, and preventing the escape of the steam and odors around the edgethereof when there is not a sufficient draft in the fire to produce a current in the tubes. 1
What I claim as my invention is- In combination with the vessel A, having its lid and bottom centrally perforated at de, respectively, the tube B, soldered to the inner surface of the vessel, and having the radial extension 0, and the tube E, soldered to the outside of the lid, and communicating with tube B by steam-tight joint, as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 10th day of November, 1875.
