ROYAL E. DEANE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
STEAM-COOKING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 329,024, dated October 27, 1885.
Application filed December 3, 1884. Serial No. 149,433. (No model.)
.T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROYAL E. DEANE, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Cooking Apparatus, of which the following is a description.
This invention relates to apparatus for cooking articles of food by steam heat; and it has for its object a simple, inexpensive, and efficient device by means of which the various modes of cooking-such as boiling` baking, roasting, broiling, Sic-may be practiced.
The invention consists of novel features of construction and combinations, to be hereinafter described, and claimed in the clauses at the close of this specification.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a vertical section of my improved steam-cooking apparatus. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the counterpoised lid raised from the cooking-chamberrIhe same letters of reference are used in both figures to designate corresponding parts.
The cooking-Vessel may be of any preferred shape or size, and the parts may be cast or formed` of sheet metal.
The bottom A of this vessel is constructed with double walls a a', which form a steamspace, A', the bottom wall, a', being tted to receive a steam-supply pipe, s, and an exhaust-pipe, e. This exhaust-pipe e should be located at the lowest point in the wall a', (though not so shown in the drawings,) in order to carry off'all water of condensation formed in the steam-space A'. The bottom A is provided with an outwardly projecting flange, cito which the upper portion or body, B, of the vessel is secured. This body B is also formed with double walls b b', forming a steam-space, B', entirely independent of the steam-space A in the bottom, and is fitted to receive a steam-pipe, s', and an exhaust-pipe, e. For convenience and economy,I prefer to connect the steamsupply pipes s and s' to a steam-supply pipe, S, common to both, and also connect the exhaust-pipes e and e' to an exhaust-pipe, E, common to both, the pipes s s and e e being each tted with suitable valves to open or close communication between the steam-spaces A and B' and the steam and eX- haust pipes S E, in order that the steam-supply and exhaust of each of these steam-spaces may be entirely independent of each other.
To draw off the liquid contents of the vessel, I provide a pipe, F, leading from thelowest point in the upper wall, a, of the bottom, said pipe being provided at a suitable point with a cock, f, as shown.
The lid D is preferably hollow and is hinged to a bracket, b2, secured to the exterior wall, b', of the body B of the vessel. `The hingestrap d projects a distance beyond the hingepintle, and to its outer end is secured a weight or counterpoise, C, which serves to prevent the lid, when open, from falling.
It will be seen from the foregoing description that upon opening the cocks in pipes s and e steam will be admitted to space A', thus heating only the bottom of the vessel, and that upon closing said cocks and opening the cocks in pipes s' and e steam will be admitted to space B', thus heating the body of the vessel. When it is desired to heat the entire vessel, all of the cocks above named are opened to the proper extent.
I do not limit myself to any particular form of Vessel, or to the details of construction, as
many changes may be made therein without departing from the principle of my invention*- as, for instance, the steam-spaces A' and B might be made proportionally smaller.
I claiml. A steam-cooking apparatus consisting of a vessel provided with double walls forming two or more independent steam-spaces, whereby the different portions of the vessel may be heated separately or simultaneously, substantially as described. l
2. In a steam-cooking apparatus, the combination, with the vessel having double walls forming two or more independent steamspaces, of independent steam and exhaust pipes for each of said spaces, substantially as described.
