ALEXANDER CUNNINGHAINI, F STEWARTON, SCOTLAND.
THREAD-CUTTING APPARATUS.
Application filed October 8, 1928, Serial No. 310,993, and in Great Britain September 21, 1928.
This invention rel atcs to the manufacture of stockings of the type provided with reinforcement in the vicinity of the heel and is particularly concerned with apparatus' for separating from such stockings the loose threads located within tho stocking as a result of thc reinforcing operation.
Apparatus of this type as constructed heretofore includes a relatively solid mandrel which is inserted into the stocking and presents two interdental spaces through which the loose threads are led towards reciprocatory guillotine. It is found, however, that apparatus of this type is incapable of accommodating the loose threads of stockings incorporating relatively narrow reinforcement and so-cailed point heel, only the longer threads being able to pass over the solid portions bri ging the interdental spaces.
The present invention provides an iinproved apparatus which is so designed as to sever from `stockings the loose threads of relatively narrow reinforcementand socalled point heel reinforcement.
An apparatus according to the invention comprises, essentially, a tubular mandrel of which the leading end is formed as a comb having multitudinous teeth through the interdental spaces of which the loose threads are adapted to pass, and means located within the mandrel for severing the threads from the stocking, the widely separated pairs of spaces receiving the longer threads and the narrowly separated pairs of spaces receiving the shorter threads.
Apparatus' constructed in accordance with the invention is illustrated in the drawing in which Fig. l is a side elevation, Fig. 2 an end elevation, Fig. 3 a longitudinal sect-ion showing the thread-cutting operation.
The apparatus shown comprises a tubular cylindrical mandrel l of which the leading end is formed at 2 as a comb having multitudinous teeth. Through the interdental spaces of the comb the loose threads 8 are caused lto pass by the operation of slipping the stocking over the mandrel l, the longer threads passing through widely separated pairs of spaces and the narrower threads passing through narrowly separated pairs of spaces. A toothed cutter t is either rotatable or reciprocable within the mandrel and co-operates with cutting edges 5 at the roots of the teeth of said comb so as to sever the threads 3 from the stocking.
The critter is shown as mounted on a spindle 6 journalled in a bearing 'T on the mandrel and is equipped with crank 8 which may be rota-ted or oscillated according to the motion to be imparted to the cutter.
The cutter is so shaped as closely to tit the inner face of the mandrel.
It will be seen that, by virtue of the comb formation of the mandrel, the capacity of the apparatus to cut the threads of narrow or point heel reinforcement is limited to the thickness of any one tooth as distinguished from the thickness of the entire half mandrel of apparatus as constructed heretofore.
I claim Y 1. In an apparatus of the kind described, in combination, a tubular mandrel of which the leading end is formed as a comb having multitudinous teeth presenting interdental spaces for the reception of loose reinforcement threads of a stocking so that the widely separated pairs of spaces receive the longer threads and the narrowly separated pair of spaces receive the shorter threads, and means located within said mandrel for severing said threads from said stocking.
2. In an apparatus of the kind described, in combination, a tubular mandrel of which the leading end is formed as a comb having multitudinous teeth presenting intcrdcntal spaces for the reception of loose reinforcement threads of a stocking so that the widely separated pairs of spaces receive the longer threads and the narrowly separated pairs of spaces receive the shorter threads, and a multiplo toothed cutter operable within the mandrel for effecting the thread severing operation.
In an apparatus of the kind described, in combination, a tubular mandrel toothed at its leading end to form a comb and presenting interdental spaces for the reception of the loose reinforcement threads of a stocking so that the widely separated pairs of spaces receive the longer threads and the narrowly separated pairs of spaces receive the shorter threads, a multiple toothed cutter movable circularly about the axis of the mandrel to cover said loose threads from said stocking and means external to the comb for effecting circular movement of said cutter.
4. In an apparatus of the kind described, in combination, a tubular cylindrical mandrol, oohed at its leading end to forni a the zr-xis of the nmndrei to sever said loose Comb und presenting interdenal spaces for threads from said stocking and means 10 the reception of the loose reinforcement' ternai to the Comb for ei'eeting circular movethreads of a sioeking ,so that thel Widely ment of said cutter.
sepzuaed pairs of spaces receive the longer In testii'nony whereof I have `signed my threads and the narrowly sepa-rated pairs of naine to 'this speeiiieation.
spaces receive the shorter threads, a multiple toothed Cutter movable eireuarly about ALEXANDER C UNNNGHAM.
